Santee, California is a small town in the Central Valley of California. The population was 5,836 at the 2010 census. It is part of Fresno County. The first people to live in Santee were the Costanos and Mission Indians. The Costanos died out in the late 1800s and their descendants were not able to establish themselves as farmers or ranchers so they moved away from Santee until after World War II when they recolonized it. In 1951, a group of men from San Jose brought seedlings of willow trees back with them on a train ride from San Francisco to Stockton and then on to Fresno. They named their new community Willows because they saw many willows growing near their home in San Jose. There are four types ofwillows found in Santee: northern redwood, southern redwood, Coulter oak, and American oak. In 1957, a post office was established at Santee and mail was carried twice a day between Willows and San Jose using wagons pulled by mules. In 1959 there were six homes built; three for men who worked at local businesses such as contractors, smithsmiths, wagonmakers etc., two for women who worked as nurses at nearby hospitals (the Women’s Hospital Annex & Main Building), one for an old Army Captain who ran his own lumber business (Captain John Smith House), and one for an Air Force Colonel who ran his own grocery store (Colonel John Smith Store). In 1960-1961 there were no homes built but school District 2 erected a building which served as the first high school in this area which graduated its first class in 1962-1963 including Mrs. Henson who had been teaching second grade since 1943 before becoming principal of High School #1A later that year! That same year also saw the opening of Honda Car Sales Ltd., located on West First Street just south of 3rd Avenue South which became headquarters for all car sales throughout Southern California including Santee! From 1961 through 1969 there was only one store open; however due to population growth (+50%) this store was enlarged into 4 buildings accommodating large car sales areas! After 1969 when Highway 8 crossed over into SantEE from east to west providing access to larger markets outside the Central Valley (& Truckee Meadows), more stores opened up along with several new residential development around what is now called Third Avenue South including some still functioning as supermarkets/restaurants today! This growth caused increased traffic congestion on rural streets leading toachovernor Mrs. Henson’s suggestion that she develop an Old Time Village style park adjacent to her school which would havesidewalks running along each side with residences perched atop gardens providing shade while children played; this idea eventually became reality known as “The Park” today! In 1970-1971 Mrs Henson retired leaving behind her successful school district where she has been serving ever since as Chairperson/Superintendent emeritus!
