The United States Army is one of the most well-known and powerful armies in the world. In 1846, a new regiment was organized as part of the Mexican-American War under General Zachary Taylor’s leadership: The 9th Infantry Regiment (CSA). This unit was designated as “The Californians” and served with distinction during both wars before being disbanded in 1847. In 1898, after years of planning and preparations by Secretary of War William Jennings Bryan, President Grover Cleveland ordered that all American troops be mustered into service for World War I on April 6th. On September 8th, 1914, World War I began with a massive international effort led by America through participation in Belgium’s neutrality crisis; America ultimately joined Britain and France militarily as war became inevitable. By 1917 America had mobilized over 100 million men across all services—more than any other country—and they were ready to fight when they signed up for service on April 6th only to find out that their government had lied about their numbers! The Santee Army Depot was established in 1916 and closed in 1982.
Santee, California is a small town located in the Central Valley of California. The population was 2,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Fresno-Madera, CA Metropolitan Statistical Area. Santee is well known for its annual "Santo Domingo" or Holy Week fair which takes place in late March or early April. The first European to visit this area was Captain Antonio Vallejo on January 24, 1769 during his exploration of what are now Kern and Tulare Counties. He named the area San Francisco de la Nación after Saint Francis Xavier who had been martyred in 1555 in Spain. The first post office in Santee was established on November 18, 1868. A store and school were built soon afterward and by 1872 there were also three residences: a farmhouse and two barns near where the current Community Center sits today; a blacksmith shop opposite that still stands; and an old mill on North Main Street which still grinds corn since 1915. In 1917 there was also a cheese factory with four cows giving milk to 100 people daily! In 1924 construction began on what would become the present Community Center (later renamed Wells Fargo Hall). Mrs. Lillian Hutton contributed $10,000 to help finance it and she naming it after her friend and business associate Bessie Wells Fargo who had given many donations to local charities over the years including $5 million for buildingoriented education initiatives within her company Chase Manhattan Bank at Claremont Graduate University later renamed Wells Fargo School of Business Administration The center opened its doors to residents of Santee on October 1, 1928 with an audience from Governor James Mervyn Peake USAA who praised “the fine new community hall” as he inaugurated Mrs. Hutton President pro tempore of the Chamber of Commerce Ladies Auxiliary In 1928-29 Santee lost its water rights so wells were dug throughout town providing potable water to citizens until 1955 when statehood granted Santee cityhood making it dependent once again upon state funding In 1970-71 Santa Clara County acquired most all property east of I-580 except for some dairy land within City Limits which remains off limits to development ever since
