The Santa Cruz Coast Guard Station in Santee, California is the oldest continuously operating coast guard station on the West Coast of North America. The station was founded on November 10, 1848 as a small adobe brick building at the mouth of the San Francisco River. It became a full-time coast guard station on May 1, 1861 when it relocated from its original location north of Fort Point to present day Santee. The present building was completed in 1912 and served as the Command Post for both Air Station No. 5 and Naval Air Station El Dorado until 1959 when they were combined into Naval Air Base El Centro.
Santee, California is a small town in Northern California located on the Pacific Ocean. The population was 2,853 at the 2010 census. It has a strong history and culture that reflects its location on the edge of the ocean and its relationship to surfing and sailing; both are popular tourist attractions. The town was founded by James Irvine in 1887 as an agricultural community on what is now known as Santa Cruz Island. The name "Santee" comes from Spanish meaning "place of milk." The island became part of America after independence from Spain in 1821. In 1906, Santee became an incorporated town with a population of 1,500 people. Today, Santee's economy depends largely on tourism, which has grown steadily over the years. Many businesses survive due to their reliance on visitors who come for beaches and surfing; some notable companies include surfboard maker Surfing World Industries (SWI), clothing retailer Old Navy, furniture store Homejoy and real estate developer Colony Capital Properties Group Incorporated (CCPG). Surfing has always been important in Santee; local waves have consistently produced good barrels since they were first measured in 1903. In 1947, Congress passed the National Defense Authorization Act which established the Coast Guard as an independent service with its own budget and authority. The act also provided for coast guard gifts and donations to be made available to certain organizations within the Service. Since its inception, coast guard gifts have been a way for Americans to show their support for our nation’s security and preserve our coastline. Some of these gifts include: donated boats, patrol vessels, helicopters, uniforms and equipment; monetary donations; and artwork or architecture inspired by coastal communities around America.

The Santee Valley was a grassy valley located in south central California that ran from the Santa Clara River to the Tehachapi Mountains. The valley was formed by several uplifting plateaus, and its boundaries varied greatly over time. The most important of these were the San Andreas Fault, which runs along the eastern edge of the valley, and the Tehachapi Mountains to its south. To the north, it included parts of Kern County and Inyo County.historic sites located in Santee include: Mission Santa Cruz de la Salle, El Dorado Hotel and Casino, Rancho Rinconada Adobe Museum, Park Service Headquarters at Big Trees Grove, La Jolla Naval Air Station (now Naval Air Station Miramar), Offutt AFB (now Offutt Regional Airport) and Playa Vista High School. The first Europeans to visit Santee were Spanish Franciscans who explored this area in 1769-1770 after arriving from missions in Alta California. They named this area San Juan Bautista because they believed it held a water source resembling that of Jesus Christ's native country of Judea. In 1846–1847 Mexican nationals working for General Antonio López de Santa Anna built a mission on an old Ute Indian village near present-day Mount Shasta in what is now northeastern Kern County. The mission was called "Calvary" after Calvary Chapel in Manchester England where Jesus died on Easter morning instead of being crucified as planned by his followers. In 1851–1852 ranch pioneers James Folsom and John Wesley Powell discovered gold at Placer Dome near modern day Needles on Humboldt Bay while exploring for exploration leads into adjacent San Joaquin Valley beyond today’s Sacramento County line; they called their discovery “Placer Hill” or “GOLDEN PLACER” due to their finding of large quantities of gold nuggets as well as silver bullion including coins worth $2 million at various locations within 10 miles (16 kilometers) downhole throughout their search.. Upon hearing about this discovery Folsom organized an expedition led by himself with help from fellow ranchman C S Masten to explore those areas further downhole but did not find any significant amounts of gold or silver until he traveled more than 100 miles (160 kilometers) below surface past Goldfield Lake some 5 miles (8 kilometers) east-northeast thereof before encountering metamorphic rocks that had been exposed during an earlier earthquake swarm weeks earlier off today’s Angel Hills Coast Range southeastward thence into today’s Inyo County just beyond today’s Mojave Desert National Preserve northwestward.. Upon reaching GOLDEN PLACER they found evidence both above ground as well as underground totaling 2 million ounces weight (.910 metric tons) with 24 coins/ounce (.048 kg). This largest known collection ever made up until then includes many rare types such as outstanding specimen Barber dime () also worth $100 thousand when sold new at auction last year . On October 8th 1850 American Party member Charles Wampler became the first person ever recorded dying while hunting big game around Needles Ferry Landing area when he fell 3200 feet onto granite outcropping resulting in broken vertebrae and severe spinal compression which caused paralysis from lowerbrain damage lasting 6 months.. Today there are several Visitor Centers located hereabouts telling local history including one open daily 9am-5pm visitor center hours starting Springtime thru Falltime; driving tour rates are $5 per person for adults/$2 per person aged 13 & younger; free admission weekdays 9am-3pm & 4pm-midnight; self parking is available nearby lot #904 next door offers vouchers for lots #811 & #804 .
Santee was founded in 1868 by Nicholas-Jacques de Santee, a French fur trader. It became an incorporated town in 1871. The town's first post office opened in 1872. In 1915, Santee became the seat ofranch district for San Diego County.
