Santee, California is a small town located in Kern County, California. It was founded in 1885 by George Santee and his wife Lillie. The town has a population of about 4,000 people today. The history of Santee begins with George Santee and his wife Lillie who founded the town in 1885. At the time, Santee was a gold prospector and he knew that he needed to find a place to live so that he could continue making money. He found an old ad for land on the side of a hill and bought it. The first settlers were mostly men because there wasn't enough land available for women at the time. Over time, Santee started building homes and businesses in Santee. He also built roads and bridges to help get his goods to market. In 1907, he donated $10,000 to build the first school in SantEE which then became known as "Lillies School". In 1915, Santee donated another $10,000 for another school which became known as "George's School". over time these schools evolved into what we now know as "SantEE High School" and "SantEE Elementary School". In 1957, when San Bernardino County was created from parts of Kern County, SantEE became part of that new county. Today it still maintains its own government with its own mayor and local elections taking place each year.
