Santee, California is a small town in Contra Costa County, California, east of the city of Oakland. The population was 1,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the San Francisco Bay Area. The first Europeans to visit Santee were Spanish soldiers and missionaries in 1602 who named it San Pedro de Atacama after another mission in that area. In 1824, American pioneers began to arrive and name the community "Santee" after Captain John Sutter's Ranch on Humboldt Bay in Northern California. In 1848, a group of about 25 farmers from nearby Folsomville settled here and built a log cabin called Fort Point on what is now US Highway 101. The fort served as an Arsenal for various goods transported down the coast by wagon road from Benicia (now Berkeley) and other towns through Santee until around 1870 when it was closed due to increased rail traffic at Yerba Buena Cove near Oakland.
