Santee is a small town in Northern California, located about an hour's drive from Sacramento. The population was 5,836 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Glenn County and the largest city in Glenn County by population. The Santee mission was founded in 1829 by Father Francisco Lopez de Santa Clara as a Catholic outpost on Rancho San Pablo. After Mexican independence, the mission became part of US territory before being acquired by California in 1850. In 1852, it became part of Glenn County when it was organized from parts of Alameda and Contra Costa counties. The post office opened in 1853, and the first school was built in 1865. The first store opened in 1870. In 1915, a fire destroyed most of the downtown business district but did not damage any homes or churches. A new downtown development began around this time with several blocks of commercial storefronts and two hotels; however, there has been little redevelopment since then because of high real estate prices and competition from larger cities nearby. In 1980-1981, efforts were made to revive downtown Santee with some public/private funding but no success; however, plans are now underway to update and preserve historic buildings within a revitalized core area that would include restaurants, nightlife venues and other cultural attractions (see Downtown Santee). Santee, California is located in the Central Valley of California. The city was founded by Mexican Mormons in 1847 as a small town named Belén and it became a part of the United States after Mexico's defeat in the Mexican-American War. In 1868, Santee was renamed for General George Armstrong Custer, who had died during the war. The city experienced rapid growth following World War II when defense contractors relocated to Santee to build military bases and aircraft plants. However, Santee's prosperity peaked in the 1970s when oil discoveries began to develop in nearby Kern County. Since then, Santee has seen modest economic growth and its population has declined by about 10%. Santee is situated on San Joaquin River floodplain and experiences frequent flooding due to heavy rains and snowmelt. Historic structures include the old regulatory building (1849), blacksmith shop (1869), post office (1907), gymnasium (1928), Mormon temple (1929), fire station (1963) and schoolhouse (1966). Many of these buildings are now used as tourist attractions or are being restored as part of various revitalization efforts.
Santee is a small community in the Central Valley of California, about 3 miles (5 km) east of Sacramento. The name Santee comes from the Chumash word for "sandy beach." The town was founded in 1854 by Loyal American soldiers and their families who had come overland fromlegraph station at Benicia. In 1867, the first post office was established, and in 1870, the first school was built. The population of Santee grew rapidly during the Gold Rush period; in 1850, there were only 10 residents; by 1860, there were 150; and by 1870, there were 500. After gold discoveries began to be made in nearby Oroville County in 1868 and 1869, settlers moved into Santee to prospect for argentiferous coal and other minerals. In 1862–1864 two large floods caused extensive damage to properties hereabouts which led to heavy demand for building stone for road construction throughout Northern California. By 1865–1866 most buildings had been erected including a Baptist church, blacksmith shop & ovens (now a restaurant), storerooms & saloons (now part of an old furniture store), Masonic Lodge No 1 with its six corner lodges on Main Street (& now used as an art gallery), 4 brick public residences (now 2 churches), schoolhouse #1 with additions later (now hotel/motel), jail & some stores (& 3 cooperatives). The Golden State Telegraph Company laid down its line between Benicia & Sacramento in 1875-6 making it possible for people living near each other to get goods they would not have otherwise been able to purchase locally or simply shipped upriver using stages or boats etc.—a process known as transportation via water route. One result of this development was that many businesses opened up within a short radius of each other: these included harness shops directly across from each others’ doors on First Street—all manner of trade took place along the telegraph lines which crossed both Rio Lenahan Creek (at present day Hwy 509) northward into Sacramento County then southward into Contra Costa County before turning northeast again crossing back over Rio Lenahan Creek eastward into San Bernardino County thence southeast through Imperial Counties finally arriving at Benicia whereupon goods could be carried onward by stagecoach or wagon train across country all the way upriver to Angelus City
