In 1916–17, a hydroelectric power plant was built at SantEE; it began operations in 1917. In 1926, Santa Fe Railway constructed a line between SantEE and Bakersfield via Tulare County; this became part of Southern Pacific Railroad's mainline system after that company merged with Union Pacific Railroad in 1969. In 1933, during World War II, most of the town's residents went into service as military personnel within Kern County while other parts of California were occupied by troops; as such, many tools used everyday such as nails and screws were not available when war ended six months later. In 1951–52, local officials decided to erect a large cross on top of Mt Baldy Summit near present-day Antelope Valley for religious purposes only--the community did not have any money for such an event}; instead they chose to build a memorial there instead On July 21st 1957 some residents set off fireworks from their house onto Mount Baldy which sent sparks into the air causing an avalanche which destroyed part of building including most of its contents (some estimates say up to 90% loss).
