It is located on the Oregon-California border and has an elevation of 4,141 feet (1,362 meters). Santee was founded on September 10, 1859 by Dr. George A. Smith and his wife Catharine Morse Morison as a trading post between the United States and Mexico. The first post office in Santee was established on October 12, 1860. The name of the town derives from Saint Hyacinth of Hungary who pray for help to cross over into America during what is known as "the Golden Age of Migration". The town's economy changed significantly after World War II when many farmers left to work in the agricultural sector outside of Southern California due to low prices for farmland and high taxes in Northern California. In addition, many people moved into Santee because it had a large air force base which allowed them to commute to major cities such as Los Angeles or San Francisco easily. In recent years there have been efforts made by the community to revitalize their economy with new businesses being brought in including a brewery/café called Homebrewed Arts & Crafts; a fitness center; and a new school district that allows students from surrounding towns and villages access to education at Santee High School instead of having to travel miles away.

Santee is a small town in San Bernardino County, California, population 7,197 at the 2010 census. The first Europeans to come to Santee were Missionaries of Saint John the Baptist who established a mission in 1814. In 1876, the United States government acquired Rancho San Bernardino and made it part of the newly created Riverside County. In 1897, Santee became an official city with incorporation by the Board of Supervisors. It grew rapidly due to industry and agriculture, but was struggling financially during World War II until it entered into a cooperative agreement with neighboring Pomona to build munitions plants. After the war, Santee experienced rapid growth as an agricultural center as well as its current status as a bedroom community for Riverside County residents. The city has seen various changes over time including annexation by Moreno Valley in 1964 and then again by Riverside in 1998; both moves were prompted by complaints from surrounding communities about high development rates and lack of control over zoning regulations within Santee limits. In 2013–14, Mayor Don LaFontaine proposed annexing neighbouring cities of Claremont and Arroyo Grande into Santee so that they could share roads and sewer systems but this proposal was defeated 4-3 on City Council grounds that annexation would violate Claremont's right to self-government under state law while Arroyo Grande's inclusion would create too much competition for services offered by Santee officials. Today, SantEE is one of Southern California’s most vibrant small towns with an active civic life that includes numerous events each year throughout its neighborhoods (e.g., July Fourth fireworks display). Santee was founded on October 20, 1846 by Joshua Santee and his wife Clarissa. The town was named for the Spanish word "santo" meaning holy. Santee became a post office on March 6, 1847. The first store in the town opened its doors in November of that year. The town began to grow quickly with the arrival of representatives from California in 1850. In 1854, Santee had a schoolhouse and a Methodist Church built. In 1861, the first Catholic Church was built in Santee. In 1865, the US Cavalry under General James Kountz burned down part of Santee while searching for arms smugglers near San Bernardino County line
