Watt discovered gold in the area and named it after him, Watt's Gulch. The town developed gradually as various entrepreneurs took advantage of the rich mineral deposits around it. By 1850, there were over 100 people living in Santee with a population of 2,500. During World War II local troops helped garrison Santa Barbara County and support the war effort; some soldiers also used their homes for military purposes. After the war ended local businesses began to prosper as demand for goods increased from postwar veterans and newcomers alike. In 1953, construction began on Interstate 5 which crossed through Santee and divided it administratively between Los Angeles County and Ventura County; however, only about one-third of the original town square was completed before it was abandoned by residents in 1957 due to budget cuts at state government agencies related to interstate highway construction projects statewide that year. A few years later much of what remained of Santee were destroyed by an accidental fire when two oil wells were drilled near town; most notably part of Main Street between First Avenue North and Second Avenue North still stands today as a reminder of this event.
