In 1949, Mayor Harry Ladd presented an MG (machine gun) to United States Marine Corps Sergeant John Sheehan during a dinner at the Monterey Inn in San Diego. Santee, California is located in Riverside County, California. The city was founded on July 24, 1853 by Captain John Sutter and his party of the California Gold Rush. The name Santee comes from Spanish for "californian" or "pilot." The first permanent settler in Santee was James Fenton who arrived in 1854. In 1860, George A. Smith founded a post office and stagecoach stop in what is now the heart of the city. By 1870, Santee had a population of 200 residents and five stores. The peak of the gold rush period saw an influx of people that increased Santee's population to 1,500 by 1879. However, due to many factors such as drought and competition from other towns in the area, Santee's population declined over time until it reached its current size in 1914. The early years of Santee were not without controversy however due to disagreements between Captain Sutter and local merchants about how much land should be given away for settlement. This led to some tension within the community which eventually dissolved into fists when disputes arose over cattle grazing rights or whether children could participate in school programs run by their parents. Despite these issues, development continued apace with two businesses being opened within one year following Captain Sutter's arrival: A store catering to miners and capitalists while also providing social services such as a chapel; and a hotel/grange which served as both a place where visitors could stay while exploring town limits before returning home; both establishments were completed during 1855-1856 timeframe according to Ralph Neuman’s book “A History Of Southern California” In 1861 General Ventura acquired title to nearly all of Rancho San Bernardino east of Point Reyes National Seashore Including present day Santee Village including most buildings on Main Street today With this acquisition Villa began developing what would become known as Valley Park which included future City Hall (1872), High School (1905), Business District (1912), Veterans Affairs Hospital (1949) & Naval Station Point Reyes (1974). Many settlers moved into Valley Park from surrounding areas during this time including brothersDennis & Donald Anschutz who purchased 8500 acre Rancho Santa Clara on Maynard Rd SE from Manuel Nieto; father-son team Garland & Gerry Wheeler bought 2200acre Rancho San Luis Rey on November 5th 1874 from Pedro Menendez; Wm Murchison purchase 6800acre Rancho Seca west side adjacent rancho Paddock Mexican Land grant on January 12th 1880 From José Antonio Carrillo Garland Wheeler donated land comprising 3000acres south side Of Pioneer Hwy near US 101 @ Mission Rd - this land became Waterford Park today
Santee was first settled by Americans in 1836. It became a small town after the Gold Rush of 1849. The town was named for General James K. Polk, who was then governor of California.
