The USS Enterprise (CVN-68) was a guided missile destroyer of the United States Navy. She was commissioned on 12 May 1945 and served in World War II as part of the Pacific Fleet. The ship was decommissioned on 15 September 1973 and sold to Santee Ship Salvage, Inc., on 21 November 1976. She arrived at Santee on 5 December 1977 and was converted into a maritime museum ship. The Enterprise sailed from Santee on 25 January 1978 for her final voyage, stopping at Norfolk, Virginia before reaching her home port in San Diego, California on 2 February 1978.
Santee, California is a small town located in the Northern San Francisco Bay Area. Situated on the east side of the peninsula that makes up Mountain View, it straddles both banks of the bay and has a population of only about 37,000 people. The town's ZIP code is 94608. The history of Santee goes back to 1847 when two brothers, John and George Browncamp arrived from Massachusetts with their families. They founded a rancho (land grant) called Rancho San José de la Purísima Concepción just east of modern Santee on what is now known as State Route 1 (SR 1). The Brownsons were among the earliest settlers in Silicon Valley. They broughtWith them English culture, religion and newspapers which they published at their rancho until 1849 when they sold it to Jose Maria Alameda for $5,000. In 1850, Alcalde Miguel Peralta granted Rancho Santa Clara del Norte to Luis Perez de Cuellar who built a adobe fortification on top of today's Mount Davidson Schoolhouse. In 1851 Alcalde Peralta granted another land grant called Rancho Rinconada to Antonio Flores Magallanes which included present-day downtown Santee. In 1863 Rafael Rivera purchased Rancho Rinconada from FloresMagallanes for $2,500 cash plus 20 acres (8 hectares) each side of what is now Market Street. In 1870 Antonio Peña organized an agricultural society named La Sociedad Anónima Agricola de Santa Clara del Norte y San Mateo was formed with meeting places at San Lorenzo Mission and Church in Santee; El Cajon Adobe in Point Reyes; Ranchos Rinconada and Quirino nearpresent-day Fremont; and Atwater Lagoon west of Monterey Bay beyond present day Daly City limits where members could raise crops such as corn, beans and wine grapes until 1914 when Prohibition made these activities illegal. La Sociedad Anónima Agricola de Santa Clara Del Norte ySan Mateo became part of Grupo Azúcar Americana SA in 1916 when its parent company Agropec SAB merged with United Fruit Company . The first fruits grown by AGROpec were apples which were shipped down the Peninsula during World War I aboard UFOCarriers #3123 through #3249LN4C along with other agricultural products destined for Europe . Santee is a small town on the Central Coast of California. It was founded in 1887 by United States soldiers and their families who were returning from the Mexican-American War. The site of the present town, which lies within Santee Valley, was chosen because it had good water availability and good soil for farming. The first post office in Santee was established in 1889. By 1901, there were over 100 residents. The town grew quickly due to its natural resources: There are many hills that provide plenty of rainfall and fertile soil for agriculture, making Santee an ideal place to reside and raise crops. In 1915, the US Post Office moved from its original location to what is now Santee High School. In 1925, a dam was constructed near Santee to increase irrigation capacity for the local farmlands. This dam has been blamed for causing extensive damage to the environment around Santee, including loss of habitats and displacement of native plants and animals. Since then, numerous efforts have been made to rehabilitate or replant aspects of the surrounding forested area impacted by the dam construction; however, these attempts have not always been successful.
Santee was founded in 1866 by John W. Lutz and his wife, Emma. The town was named for the Santee River, which ran through it. In 1870, the Lutzes built a gristmill on the river and began to produce flour and other goods. The mill closed in 1903, but production continued until 1967 when it was replaced by an automated corn mill.
