Shipbuilding in the Ports of Santee and San Francisco date back to 1847 when Captain John P. Weems and his officers of the USS Constitution took on their first sea voyage from Portsmouth, New Hampshire. The Navy’s first ship was a tugboat, the SS Vincennes, built by Nicholas-Jacques Rousseau at Leith Walk Shipbuilders in Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin. The tugboat was used for coastal patrols until 1852 when Congress authorized the construction of warships utilizing convict labor. In response to this new development, local shipbuilders began producing warships for the Navy at an unprecedented rate. The USS Constitution was launched on December 12th, 1857. She served as America’s flagship during her tour of duty in World War I and she played a significant role in the Battle of Corregidor (1893). Upon her retirement from service she became a floating museum and tourist attraction in San Francisco. On October 20th, 1921 she arrived at Mare Island Naval Air Station where she remains today as one of America’s last commissioned naval vessels afloat. After World War II ended there were few opportunities for American ships to be retired due to advancements in technology so they were instead mothballed or sold off to other nations who later sold them back into service. On July 16th, 1990 USS Enterprise (CVN 65) became history when she was decommissioned and struck from the Naval Vessel Register after over sixty years of service! It is now part of the National Maritime Museum fleet which includes some world renown Ships including HMS Resolution (1901), HMHS Prince Of Wales (2006), HMS Illustrious (2013) and HMS Warrior (2015). Santee, California is a small town located on the north coast of San Diego County in the United States. The population was 2,569 at the 2010 census. It is part of the San Diego–Tijuana Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded by Anglo-Americans in 1853 as an agricultural community on Rancho Santee, now part of Santee Mesa. A post office was established in 1856 and remained in operation until 1959. In 1863, a wharf and landing were built at what is now Santee's downtown square; goods imported from Mexico were unloaded here and delivered to local merchants and farmers. In 1868, during Mexican American War hostilities between Mexico and United States escalated into full-scale warfare, many Anglo Americans chose to evacuate their farms near Tijuana for fear that they would be forced to fight against their own people. Thousands of civilians lost their lives as war engulfed southern California; most notably Rancho Santee's military commander Jervis Cobb who perished leading his men against Mexican forces at Tehuantepec Canyon on February 17, 1865*. Rancho Santee became a U.S.-controlled cattle range after it was purchased by Adolphus Busch from Manuel Nieto de la Hoz aboard USS "Alabama" (1862) en route to Chicago via Acapulco Bay.* After years of sporadic use as a ranch by ad hoc groups of individual ranchers* over time it reverted back to Mexican hands following its purchase by Hacienda Rancheros Sánchez y Gascón in 1903 which then passed onto his son Francisco Sánchez y Gascón who assigned it to his brother Ramón Olivas * later owner of Pismo Beach & neighboring developments like La Jolla * finally passing down through female heirs Héctorina López Jiménez & Amalia Pacheco Garrido until it came into private ownership again with current resident Jorge Ramos Perez in 2006 when he purchased one acre for $1 million from Joséfina Guerra Fariña (*See: History timeline below*) The first settlers arrived/* arrive around October or November 1853* during winter season when roads weren't finished yet so they had to walk 3 miles each day snowshoeing/hiking there way across prairies then up hillsides all the way back home(*see map). Most were either English or Irish immigrants who worked on ranches along Mission Trails or went out looking for work on coastal missions such as San Diego mission particularly Don Rafael Rivera (1786-1875)* aka Father Rafael García (1792-1857)* Second group including some women also came over winter but didn't live long because there was no water available so they had to return home soon.* Some families stayed awhile but most returned home before Christmas* see map
