In 1957, Santee became an elementary school district with three schools: Jefferson Elementary (grades kindergarten-5th grade), First Baptist Church (6th-12th grade), and Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic School (13th-16th grade). That same year saw the opening of Santee High School which serves students from pre-kindergarten through 12th grade; it replaced an earlier high school which had been built on what is now San Bernardino County Road 128 adjacent to Camp Roberts during World War II. A new fire station was commissioned in 1984; it replaced an older station that had been destroyed by a car bomb two years earlier whileCHAEO operations were taking place at Camp Roberts AFB across I-15 from SantEEe Boulevard. The original building burned down in 1987 but a new fire station was completed just south of town on Coyote Creek Road within weeks after its dedication ceremony officiated by Mayor Tim Hudgins; it features both automated dispatch systems as well as hand pumps to fight fires should they become too large or difficult to extinguish using only water resources. Santee is an incorporated town in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 1,819 at the 2010 census. It is located on the San Joaquin River. Santee's incorporation date is July 3, 1876. The Santee Mission and Adobe Walls were built by the Franciscan Friars of Bakersfield in 1875-77 as a mission and military outpost on Rancho Viejo de los Padres which encompassed present day Santee Township and parts of what are now part of Dixon and Larkspur townships. The Mission Santa Cruz de la Sierra was founded in 1879 by Father José Altamirano near present day Livermore. In 1886, Harry Bliss built a iron mill downstream from the then small community of Santee to create an industry that would power Southern California during the late 1800s until World War I when electric generation became available for industrial use. The mill remains in business today as Alcoa Energy Company's Antelope Mill produce aluminum products from ore mined from within a short distance of its campus along US Route 50 east of Santee (northwest of Dixon).
