Santee is a small town located in the Mojave Desert of eastern California. According to the 2010 census, the population was 4,869. The name Santee is derived from Spanish for "sanctuary." The town was founded in 1887 by Father Francisco Gomez and named after San Teodoro de las Flores, a Rancho San DiegoMission in central California. The first post office opened in Santee on May 6, 1889. By 1910, Santee had a population of 3,405. In 1912 the town became an incorporated municipality with a mayor and seven trustees. In 1914 Santee erected its first schoolhouse and began to provide water and power to its residents. The 1920s were years of boom for the local economy as farmers developed new crops and mined coal at nearby Antelope Valley Mines. However, during World War II many people left Santee because of wartime rationing and competition from other towns in Southern California. In 1945-46 numerous earthquakes struck the area causing extensive damage including several destroyed homes and businesses; two people died as a result. Aftermath of the Quake helped spur development around town which included new housing developments, businesses along Main Street and more recreational opportunities such as swimming pools, golf courses, beaches (including Point Reyes National Seashore) and horseback riding trails that are still present today

Santee is a small town located in San Bernardino County, California, United States. The population was 1,571 at the 2010 census. Santee is part of the Riverside–San Bernardino–Ontario metropolitan area. The first settlement in what would become Santee was made on December 12, 1874 by five men from Humboldt County, California: George A. Smith and partners; Levi Svernal; John A. Kernigan and partners (the Kernigans had emigrated from Ireland); and Augustus Wright. They named their new settlement after General James Koster's battalion that had fought in the Mexican-American War and also because of its location on the banks of the San Gabriel River which separated Los Angeles from San Bernardino County. In 1875, a post office was established at Santee with Wm Fenton aspostmaster. In 1916, it became a county seat under the jurisdiction of Riverside County when it was split off from Humboldt County. The first school in Santee was built on Main Street in 1875 by Mrs. Lizzie Bissell for her children of ten students who were attending her parents' farmstead thereabouts (now part of Rancho Cucamonga). It functioned as a one-room schoolhouse until 1876 when an addition was made to give more space and increased functionality for fourteen students including four teachers (two women). On October 30th that year, Mrs Bissell donated land to build a two-story frame school house with twelve classrooms and sixty feet long by thirty feet wide hallway leading to a gymnasium/library complex comprising fourteen classrooms plus an annex used as an auditorium/hallway during special classes or performances such as recitals or plays given outdoors on stage or before an audience composed mainly of their own children while parents attended inside where they could watch proceedings unfold without having to leave their homes—an innovation which stayed with our town until 1974 when all public schools were required to have exterior entrances providing easy access for everyone including affluent residents whose homes commandeered most if not all public spaces within minutes’ distance irrespective of whether they were inside or outside those buildings during instructional timeslots thereby reducing educational opportunities for less advantaged citizens who resided elsewhere within close proximity but still needed access to high quality instruction indoors even though doing so imposes some inconvenience since certain areas are too crowded for others during certain hours notwithstanding efforts by individual educators to provide both types of instruction simultaneously whenever possible; Superintendent Beecher declared “the excellence herein demonstrated throughout this institution makes it one Which will be looked upon with favor by other communities throughout Southern California” On February 11th 1870 Jno Bigham founded another agricultural community called Indian Hills about 7 miles east northeast of present day Santee on Pico Boulevard near Pioneer Road opposite Our Lady OF The Assumption School property now part Of Cathedral Catholic University redevelopment project) This community continued until 1907 when development ledto replacementof original village center thought to date back To 1860's & may have been built adobe homebuiltby bandit leader Jim Bowie
