Saratoga is a small town in the Mojave Desert of California. It is located about an hour's drive from Reno, Nevada and three hours from Los Angeles. The population was 3,651 at the 2010 census. The name Saratoga comes from two Indian words: sarava meaning "to stretch out" and tioga meaning "treasure". The first white man to visit Saratoga was Diego Rivera, who made paintings of Spanish missions in the area in the 1930s. In 1907, James Wickersham built a cabin on what is now called Railroad Row for his ranch hands. Wickersham named himself after Governor Manuel José de la Costa y Costilla of Mexico City. In 1911, prospectors discovered gold near where Saratoga now stands. Mining began in earnest and by 1919 there were over sixty mines operating on or within five miles of the town. By 1925 more than one hundred people lived in Sarataga; by 1929 it had become an agricultural center with 640 acres (245 ha) of land cultivable and 1,600 head of cattle. In 1931 Mayor John Fenton formed a park committee to develop a new town center around his idea that Saratoga should be considered as part of metropolitan Reno rather than serve as an isolated rural outpost surrounded by adobe huts on fertile acreage unsuitable for farming purposes. On July 25, 1932, Fenton's vision became reality when he signed legislation creating the city of Reno through which all development within five miles must go beforeFenton could sign any physical deeds or approvals for their construction or placement outside his own borders - essentially giving him carte blanche to bulldoze anything he pleased without penalty! When World War II began New Deal planners wanted to create Springfield-style housing developments around strategic military sites so they named one such site Poston Hill after Congressman Emanuel Poston (D-IL).
