Saratoga is a small city in Contra Costa County, California, United States. The population was 21,433 at the 2010 census. It is part of the San Francisco Bay Area. The original inhabitants were the Ohlone people who lived along the southern coast of what is now Contra Costa County and north of San Francisco in present-day Marin County. They abandoned their way of life in large numbers around Año Nuevo (1815), after being forced to leave their traditional hunting and gathering ways by Spanish missionaries. In 1851, gold was discovered near Amador Valley and pressure from settlers increased to abandon land that had been given to them without compensation. In 1859, an act of Congress approved the donation of 2,000 acres (10 km²) to build a town on the site where Saratoga would be located; this town was named for General John C. Fremont because he had directed its inception. In 1863, Sylvanus Thayer became the first white man to cross the Golden Gate Bridge and establish contact with Native Americans in what is now Marin County; he called upon them for assistance in building a road across western Contra Costa County from Novato through Healdsburg to Stockton (now Hayward). Although not sure if they were living among us or just visiting our area for trade purposes – there’s no evidence they even knew we existed! The first post office in Saratoga opened on December 1st 1861 under name Healdsburg but it quickly changed hands several times before finally becoming Saratoga on January 1st 1862 following its reopening as part of US postal service's effort to connect America's growing rural areas with its larger urban centers. Although production at nearby Vallejo ceased shortly thereafter due largely to high water levels within Lake Oroville during wintertime floods caused by rains then nesting peregrine falcons nesting near Vallejo - these events did nothing but strengthen efforts by local residents & businesses (& many others) working together over time culminating today with over $100M has been pledged towards fixing/maintaining/enabling Oroville Dam since 1996!!! Saugus River Navigation Company started shipping logs downriver from modern day Hercules about 1830 when pioneer George Coe transported logs downriver on his ferry MV "Hercules" which took up river access near Saugus approximately every other week beginning around 1835
