On August 1, 1846, General Fremont's army reached Los Angeles and began the process of withdrawing back to San Diego. On October 15, 1846, General Fremont received a gift from Queen Victoria in remembrance of her father, King George IV. A group of British officers had been stationed at Fort Tejon for several months and were presented with a number of cannons and other military equipment by the queen.
