In 1954, when Saratoga became part of California, their legacy as coffee pioneers continued. Saratoga is a small town in northern California, located on the east bank of the Sacramento River. It was founded in 1849 by Capt. John Sutter and his followers as an unincorporated community on the edge of present-day Sacramento County. The name derived from Indian language sagatagà, meaning "sacred place." The first post office was established in 1852, and Saratoga became a city in 1905. The town experienced periods of growth and decline throughout its history. In 1850 it had only 16 residents; by 1900 it had more than 4,000 residents. However, during the decades after World War II Saratoga's fortunes reversed: its population plummeted until the mid-1980s when it began to grow again primarily through annexations of other nearby towns and villages. Today, Saratoga is one of Northern California's most vibrant communities, with strong cultural attractions associated with its rich history and heritage.
The town of Saratoga was founded in 1837 by Captain James H. Fenton and his wife, Anna Maria. The first hotel in the town was built on the site of the present-day Saratoga Springs Village hall. In 1850, Saratoga became a county seat as part of California's newly organized system of government. The first courthouse in Saratoga was also built in 1850. In 1861, following the American Civil War, Saratoga entered into a governmental partnership with neighboring game preserves called the "Three Amigos" to provide for military supplies and troops during Reconstruction. Starting in 1892, local farmers established a cooperative market known as "The Greenmarket." In 1922, Saratoga joined forces with nearby Placer County to form what is now known as Northern California's Central Valley region. By 1930, most of the businesses and residences in downtown SARATOGA had been destroyed by fire or condemned due toeythe Great Depression; however, some new buildings were constructed such as Post Office Square (1930), Masonic Temple (1931), and Veterans Memorial Hall (1933). On December 1st, 1933 SARATOGA became an incorporated city under state jurisdiction after being granted cityhood by Governor Earl Warren. On November 3rd 1948 SARATOGA passed an ordinance creating its own school district which would continue until 1974 when it merged with Placer County Unified School District to form one unified school district managed by county officials
