Additionally, there are three other detachments located throughout Saratoga County: One at Northridge Airport; one on Lake Placid; and one at White Sands National Monument. According to statistics from 2016, there were 4,844 crewmembers working for the Coast Guard in California—an increase of 191 percent since 2000 when numbers were last taken. Saratoga is a small town in Contra Costa County, California. It is located on the southern edge of the San Francisco Bay Area and shares borders with Walnut Creek to the east, Antioch to the north and Richmond to the south. The population was 8,471 at the 2010 census. The name Saratoga comes from Spanish for "safe haven." The first Europeans to visit what is now Saratoga were Portuguese sailors sailing from Goa in India in 1542. They called it São Paulo after their ship became lost on its way there. In 1824, General John Cranch decided that his new Ranchos Santa Clara and San Mateo would be divided into two parts - one for white people and one for Native Americans. One part of Rancho Santa Clara was given to José Joaquín de Arguelles, while another part was given to his brother-in-law Manuel Miranda y Costilla. In 1827, Mirandola built a cabin near present day Saratoga Springs on land he had purchased from Sanchez. By 1830, over 50 European families had established themselves in Saratoga and by 1833 they numbered 100+. The next year saw an influx of Mormon settlers as Brigham Young led his followers westward through California during the Utah War of Independence which started in October 1850. Many Mormons chose this location because it offered good agricultural soil and no mountains in sight (although nearby Yosemite Valley did offer some lookout points). When finally admitted into the United States as a state in 1850, much of what came with it - including Saratoga - was annexed by Oakland along with Alameda County (which included Berkeley). When Sarataga Heights Cemetery opened its doors on Saturday morning, May 20th 1889 following more than $1 million raised by local citizens between February 1st 1888 and April Fool's Day that year alone...it marked just one cornerstone of a century-long history filled with community service initiatives such as streetlight dinners; Special Olympics; school assemblies; garden walks; parade floats; bake sales...etc., etcetera
