In 1853, a man named George Washington Davis founded the town of Saratoga in central California. The town grew quickly and in 1864, it was incorporated as a city. Over the years, Saratoga has become a popular tourist destination and has been home to many famous people, including William Shakespeare and Franklin D. Roosevelt.
Saratoga, California is a small town in the Central Valley of California. It is located about 20 miles east of Fresno and 30 miles west of Stockton. The population was 7,822 at the 2010 census. The town is named after General John Saratoga and his army's victory over the British Army at the Battle of Saratoga in 1777. The first settlers in Saratoga were men from New York who arrived by boat on July 5, 1847. They built a cabin near what is now downtown Saratoga. On October 17, 1848, President George Washington hosted a dinner for dignitaries in honor of Captain Augustus Thibodeau who had led an expedition to cross the Isthmus of Panama and explore new lands north of Mexico City. Among those present was then-Senator James Kieft from New York who became one of the first Americans to own land in California. On February 10, 1850, Governor John Goodwin announced that a post office would be established at Saratoga with mail service beginning on April 1st. The name for the town was chosen by vote among residents as "Saratoga Springs". On April 3rd, 1850, mail began being delivered to Sarataga from San Francisco via stagecoach and wagonloads of goods brought overland across Death Valley by Major Elisha Doniphan (1811-75) and his assistants Sheriff Jepson (1812-68) and Captains Richardson (1800-64) and Folsom (1798-1876). On October 9th 1861 delivery beganof passengers' mail from Sacramento through Death Valley crossing at Mammoth Lakes before continuing upriver past Lone Pine Pass to reach San Francisco on October 25th 1865. Passenger trains stopped at various points along their route including Atwater Depot in modern day Fresno where passengers disembarked for lunch before continuing onward to San Francisco or other destinations such as Oakland or Stockton where they transferred cars to another train liveried for return trip back into Southern California
