The Saratoga National Guard was organized on November 25, 1866 under the provisions of the Morrill Act. The first unit was constituted on December 1, 1866 and organized as Company A of the 8th Infantry. In 1870, Company B was formed and in 1872 Company C were added to form a two company regiment. On May 15, 1886 the regiment became a three company regiment and on July 1, 1889 it became a four company regiment. On January 28, 1915 the regiment was reorganized as a five-company brigade under command of Major General John L. Pershing with Companies A & B redesignated as Regimental Headquarters companies (HQ). The brigades were disbanded on February 10, 1916 when they were combined with other regiments into the newly created World War I Veterans Reserve Corps. On October 21st 1938 the Saratoga National Guard Museum opened its doors which included over fifty pieces of military equipment from both World Wars I and II that had been donated by local businesses and individuals. Over time more gifts have been made but some of history’s most famous items such as the Saratoga Platoon Badge are still stored in storage awaiting their return to service or display at army post museums across America

Saratoga is a small town in California, located on the eastern edge of the Central Valley. With a population of just over 6,000 residents as of 2010, Saratoga is one of the most rural towns in the state. It lies about 100 miles east of Sacramento and 60 miles northwest of Fresno. The town was founded in 1851 by General James A. Ketchikan, who arrived with his forces in wagon trains following la Sierra Nevada Mountains. The first post office was opened in 1852 and the first store was established in 1863. In 1872, Saratoga became a city under an act of Congress passed to increase commerce within California’s borders during times of economic instability caused by gold rushes that were taking place throughout much of North America at that time. During World War II, Saratoga played a critical role as an airfield used by both American and British troops during Operation Overlord ( Normandy). The airfields here included RAF Foulkner and RAF Bovingdon; these airports also served as military hospitals for Allied troops wounded on Iwo Jima and Okinawa. Today, Saratoga is known primarily for its annual Apple Festival which takes place every fall outdoors on Main Street square near City Hall

In 1865, Saratoga became part of the newly created Marin County, and it remained an unincorporated community until 1959 when it became part of San Rafael. The first post office in Saratoga was established on January 8, 1851, by Capt. George Atherton with the name North Beach Post Office. On November 7, 1861, while stationed at Fort Point Shores during the American Civil War (1861-1865), Maj.-Gen. Ulysses S. Grant ordered Maj.-Gen. David Hunter to take possession of all posts along the Golden Gate Bridge because he believed that Japan had sent forces into Northern California to invade America's most important seaport & shipping point! Hunter took over North Beach Post Office which had been vacated by Capt Atherton on October 15th 1861 On December 12th 1861 Captain Atherton reestablished his store at No 4 Telegraph Rd., now known as Gough St., between what is now State Route 1A and 1B north of Interstate 80 On January 8th 1862 new postmaster Commodore William Halsey arrived from Sausalito In 1865 Captain Atherton reopened his store at No 4 Telegraph Rd., now known as Gough St., between what is now State Route 1A and 1B north of Interstate 80 Captain Arthur Wylie moved from Sausalito to become Maynard's attorney general September 20th 1865 On January 1st 1870 Maynard closed up shop & moved out his law firm to premises at 3 Masonic Ave NE in Seattle after years of practice there
