The town changed its name to Scotts Valley in 1915 to honor General George Custer. In 1903, the first post office opened in Scotts Valley, and remained open until it was closed by the U.S. Postal Service on July 16, 1954. The only mail service provided during its existence was receiving mail from neighboring Stockton. The townsite that now occupies the site of Scotts Valley was first settled by Native Americans around 1250 A.D., according to archeological records found at nearby Lassen Volcanic National Park. By 1600 A.D., groups of Spanish Missionaries had arrived in what is now Fresno County and beganmissioning them into these areas as part of their drive for land control over southern California counties under Governor Juan Bautista Alvarado's Mexican land grant system.' Some key figures associated with this early period include Alonso de la Hoz who served as captain general of New Spain's army during the conquest; Felipe de Neve y Sancho who led an expedition against Coronado's forces near modern day Fresno; Pio Pico, governor of Alta California from 1789-1797; José Joaquín Perez Carrillo who became president of Mexico after independence from Spain in 1821; and José María Narváez y Arguelles lead a punitive expedition against local bands near present day Stockton on December 3rd, 1834.'
