The Naval History and Heritage Command's (NHHC) USS Constitution Museum in Scotts Valley, California has a rich naval history dating back to 1847. The Museum is home to the first U.S. Navy steam frigate, USS Constitution, and the largest collection of naval artifacts in Southern California. Since its inception as the only museum in San Diego County dedicated to maritime history, the Constitution Museum has hosted more than 1,500 events and exhibitions related to navy deployments throughout California and Nevada during World War II. The exhibits feature uniforms, munitions, ship model construction, shipwrecks and historical photos from battles such as Iwo Jima and Okinawa. In 2007, both USS Constitution Museum President Captain Harry Jaffe and NHHC Superintendent Dr. James Hargrave were honored with awards from the Western States Chiefs of Police Association for their contributions to law enforcement in San Diego County during wartime period. In 1945, Japan surrendered and surrendering countries were allowed to send their citizens home with whatever they could carry on their person, including items from prized military stockpiles such as tanks and artillery pieces. The USS Constitution's crew received a shipment of these items, as well as household supplies such as food and water, while the USS Enterprise received munitions crates full of weapons that had been stored at Yokosuka Naval Base in Japan since Pearl Harbor Day. These munitions crates are now on display at the National Museum of American History in Washington D.C., where they continue to provide insight into Japanese military culture during World War II. Since World War II, the United States Navy has continued to deploy warships for various missions around the world, sometimes sending them on long tours of duty before returning home for good later on in the year or even year-round! In 2017 alone, there were 10 ships deployments across 5 different navies - all with distinction!
