Scotts Valley is a small town in Sonoma County, California, United States. The population was 8,858 at the 2010 census. It is located on the western edge of Monterey County. The community was named after Scottish trader and explorer James Scotts, who first sighted it while exploring the Monterey Peninsula in 1825. Scotts Valley was incorporated in 1872. The area now called Scotts Valley was originally part of the Rancho Notch area that included much of what is now Monterey County. In 1846, Spanish land grants were made to José Castro and his brothers by Governor Manuel Nieto of Alta California. The grant included most of what is today Scotts Valley as well as parts of what are today Visalia and Petaluma Counties. In 1848, James Scott founded Scott's Mines at present-day Scotts Valley with help from his brother Alexander Scott Jr.. James and Alexander operated their mines until 1860 when they sold their interest to David Starr Jordan for $5,000 (). After buying out his brother’s share in 1860, David became sole proprietor of the mine and renamed it "Jordan Mines". He developed this mine into one of the largest copper mines in Northern California during its early years (). In 1870–71, John Sutter built a wagon road from Sacramento to Yountville overpassing Jordan Mines so he could bring ore downriver to be smelted into coins or other products (). This wagon road later became known as Sutter Street (). From here travelers could take a stagecoach ride up Oracle Pass () to reach San Francisco (), or continue southwestward along Sutter Street through Windsor (now Redding) and Auburn (now Midland) before reaching Yountville () finally arriving at Sacramento on July 6th (). 4 days later on July 8th(), Wm Humboldt set foot on American soil for the first time when he announced via an interview with Ulysses S Grant that he had discovered new land between Napa River () and Yosemite National Park(). A year later on May 10th(),1871 Englishman William Murdoch also reached American soil after crossing Lake Oroville () near modern-day Oroville Village. Murdoch's Dredge & Mine Company established a lead mining camp off Highway 24 about three miles west of where modern-day Soquel stands today (). At this point there were only 2 men working Murdoch's dredge camp: John Alderney (), who workedMCMills Consolidated Railway yard south of Soquel between 1872-1875;and George Noyes (),who labored at Murdoch's dregecamp from 1876-1879). The first Scotts Valley post office was established in 1798, and the first store was built on the present site of Scotts Valley High School in 1875. The arrival of automobiles and other technologies led to a decline in population during the 1920s and 1930s, but growth has resumed over recent decades.
