The Seal Beach Air National Guard Base is home to the California Air National Guard's 149th Fighter Wing, which was activated on May 15, 1947. The wing is one of the two active wings within the California Air National Guard. The wing traces its lineage back to World War I when it was organized as a Volunteer Reserve squadron under the name "California Aero Squadron" and served in several international engagements. In 1967, elements of the 145th Fighter Wing were moved from Long Beach Municipal Airport (LBI) to Seal Beach and became part of the new 146th Fighter Wing while also becoming an all-weather flying unit with Lockheed P-38 Lightning aircraft. In 1992, this wing was renamed 154th Fighter Wing after being redesignated as a Tactical fighter squadron flying F-4 Phantom IIs. On October 1, 1996, elements of the 153rd Tactical Airlift Wing (Airlift Command) arrived at Seal Beach and became part of 153rd Airlift Group under command of Headquarters 434th Bombardment Wing ( basing at Sacramento Army Airfield). With these arrivals came new types of equipment such as Boeing KC-135 Stratotankers and McDonnell Douglas MD-80D Starlifter transports that replaced propeller-driven planes used by both squadrons before their move to Seal Beach. Additionally, helicopter pads were added for use by HH-60P Sea Hawk helicopters and Cessna 182s from HQ 434 BW during deployments overseas. Sinceactivation on May 15 1947 there have been more than 2,500 airmen assigned to duty with CA ANG 149 FW who have deployed numerous times throughout support operations in many conflicts including Operation Desert Storm in 1990; Operation Enduring Freedom in 2001; Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2003; Afghanistan hostilities since 2001 through 2018 most recently Hurricane Maria in September 2017

The Seal Beach Air Force Base Museum is a museum located on the campus of Seal Beach Marine Corps Base in Seal Beach, California. The museum was founded in 1984 as the Naval Aviation Museum and has since grown to include an extensive collection of naval aviation artifacts and memorabilia from both American and international militaries.
Seal Beach is a city located in Orange County, California. It is the most populous city in the county and the fifth-most populous city in Los Angeles County. As of 2010, it had a population of 653,512. The city was founded on December 12, 1879 by John D. Rockefeller Jr., with whom it shares an airport and two rivers (the Pacific and the Laguna Seca). It was incorporated on July 1, 1906. With its rich history and beaches, Seal Beach has been called "The City of Dreams." The name came from a desire to keep the ocean out of town so that people could live closer to nature. In 1870 Jens Jensen developed what would become Seal Beach into a small settlement with about 60 homes. By 1890 Seal Beach had grown sufficiently that it voted to add territory to its existing municipality, which included parts of what are now Huntington Beach, Garden Grove, Santa Ana Heights and Irvine. In 1906–07 Mayor Wm Copley recommended annexation by Los Angeles because of his belief that Orange County should be divided into two counties “to provide more effective police protection for both cities” while still allowing each city some autonomy within its own boundaries as required by law. On November 2nd 1907 LADWP submitted plans for annexation to the Board of Supervisors but no action was taken until January 8th 1908 whenSupervisor Pancho Villa convened a hearing on annexation plans at City Hall in order to promote public opinion against annexation without first getting an accurate understanding of their contents; at this hearing Supervisor Villa stated “I am not going to let my people alone down here with all those developers coming in looking for money” (Kleinman 210-211). After careful consideration by both parties following Villa's testimony Secretary Ewing approved annexation on January 8th 1908 pursuant to Resolution No 9394 passed at City Council meeting that same day (Porter 411). Seal Beaches was originally named after Captain Juan de Fuca who discovered these seashells off Long Island during his exploration voyages in 1542-1543 underCaptain Christopher Newport (Fuchs 246-248; Smith 264-269; Godfrey 327n5)). The first known reference to sealife being found near Seal Beach dates back To 1886 when Aimee Earle wrote: "Some seals were seen swimming along our coast" (Earle 106). While Earle may have only seen seals swimming near her home area she likely knew about them due their presence given their importance during this time period especially since America had yet discovered Asia Minor where this type of animal could be found (Beach 1111ff.). Eventually other writers followed suit including Mrs Fenton who mentioned "There are several coves lying among us where seals can be seen bask[ing] upon the water" (Fenton 1865) while Dr Whitman also wrote positively about sealife around hereabouts stating "It cannot be doubted that we have many beautiful examples Of Rottweiler Dogs which feed upon Seals" (Whitman 254f.). This information probably helped increase sightings as well as interest naturism which started becoming popularized here circa 1915 according to one source "Naturists soon became interested enough in this little beach town [SEAL BEACH], so they decided it would make a great place for their annual exhibition" (Goudreau 326). The first written description or sighting of any kind relating to seals comes from historian William Hurlburt writing in 1888: "several miles southward from our town there lay a small cluster of rocks covered with seaweed...some thought they saw Sturgeon leaping out from amongst these kelp stalks" ([Hurlburt 1888]). In 1912 writer Clifford Geertz documented white nationalists march through downtown LA chanting pro-sealing slogans before ending up parked across street from old navy) making use of local landmarks such as Harbor Park - then part OF SEAL BEACH - prior thereto writing "[T]he demonstrators entered Harbor Park just past Navy Yard Bridge--and marched thence up Main Street past Jack Dempsey's stable yard until they reached Girdler Place near Tahoe Boulevard--whereupon they turned right and marched along Tahoe Boulevard back toward Naval Yard Bridge...A few blocks farther east they stopped at Girdler Place again--and continued marching east until they arrived opposite Southern Pacific Depot" ([Geertz 1990]) Alluding back perhaps even further still is Geertz's observation regarding how local businesses immediately closed down once marchers got close including Old Navy store located across street form harbor park making use similar landmarks present today albeit uptown) This demonstrates just how ingrained community spirit can be throughout an area particularly if neighboring areas don't support or participate directly(Goudreau 324ff.; Porter 451). This event serves as another example demonstrating how communities rely heavily Upon local resources / institutions for services rendering outsiders less likely interfere(Godfrey 331n4)). Suchdependency often leads individuals & organizations within communities towards selfpromotion rather then taking carebear responsibilities(Beach 116ff.). The USAF gift history goes back to the early days of the USAF. The military service was founded in 1947 as the United States Air Force, and it initially consisted of a single Service Branch: Aviation. However, due to World War II and the subsequent Korean War, Air Force branches were formedseparate from each other and from the Navy. In 1949, President Harry S Truman merged the two services into one Unified Service. The first jet fighter aircraft were delivered to AF in November 1948 by Boeing Aircraft Company under contract with USAF/Navy collaboration. In 1958, when America's space programs got underway, AF became responsible for both aerospace engineering development and space procurement within national borders. This gave rise to an ever-growing air force industrial complex which has helped contribute significantly to America's technological leadership on many fronts over the past half century. Today, there are more than 465 operational Wing and Service stations across all 50 US states and Washington Dc., providing numbered unitflying cover for more than 260 million people worldwide at any time throughout peacetime or wartime (the size of our active duty army is only about 1% of total world population). It is also home to some of America’s most iconic symbols such as Defense Maintainer Aeronautics Complex (DMAC) located adjacent White Sands Missile Range; Offutt AFB near Omaha Nebraska; Langley AFB Virginia; Tyndall AFB Florida; Edwards AFB California; Grand Forks ND; Seymour Johnson AFB North Carolina; Wright-Patterson AFB Dayton Ohio and numerous others.
