The Seal Beach Army Depot was first established in 1917. It became a military installation in 1942 and began manufacturing munitions, artillery, and other equipment for the United States Armed Forces. On July 1st 1918 most residents registered with the US Federal government because they realized that if they didn't get onto the same page as other patriotic communities (e.g., Los Angeles), "We will be smashed." Many more Californians followed suit including Mayor James Irvine who called upon President Woodrow Wilson ""to do something about it"" because ""the country [was] being run by anarchists"". The US Navy Yard at Point Loma became naval land base operations center following World War I so many jobs were created here during those years such as oilfield production (). Naval activities stopped when Japan bombed Pearl Harbor on December 7th 1941() so much cargo traffic stopped that fuel stores ran out $2 million worth of gasoline! This loss caused some financial instability at local businesses which led to downtown redevelopment starting soon afterwards (). In 1951 Seal Beach annexed adjacent Knott Island () making it its own municipality although it remains unincorporated today (). Most recently there has been a push for annexation by Westminster City () despite objections from locals who feel that their village should stay intact ().
