Seal Beach, California is a town in Orange County, California, United States. The population was 21,752 at the 2010 census. Seal Beach is located on the southern coast of Orange County and it is part of the Los Angeles metropolitan area. In 1892, white men from Oregon discovered gold in what is now Seal Beach while prospecting for new land to settle. They named their discovery "Seacoast" after their previous landing site on Coaster Island off the Oregon Coast. The first recorded reference to Seal Beach was made in 1894 when the Lighthouse Board used its report on discoveries along Coastal California's Pacific Coast to name two small bays east of Newport Harbor - Seal Beach and Laguna Seca - Beaches after British Columbia's Queen Victoria's private yacht "HMS Rattler". In 1898, an act of Congress created Surf City as a incorporated city with jurisdiction over all beach areas within its boundaries extending seaward from Point Conception Peninsula southward to Long Wharf (now downtown). At that time there were only a few hundred people living in Surf City and most residents worked on or near the docks or sea front businesses which lined Point Conception Peninsula during summer months.
