The National Guard in Seal Beach, California has been providing service to the community for many years. The first unit to be mobilized was the 9th Signal Battalion on December 4, 1916. The battalion was made up of veteran soldiers from Southern California who had fought in World War I. In 1934 the battalion became part of the 8th Infantry Division and served until 1945. During that time it deployed to both China and Europe. In 1948 the unit was reactivated as an armory guard detachment and moved to Seal Beach from Hayward, California. It remained here until 1958 when it became a full-time unit with its own barracks and office building. In 1965 it became part of Headquarters and Headquarters Battery of the 1st Infantry Division stationed in San Diego before moving back to Seal Beach in 1978. The National Guard Bureau states that since 1978 “the National Guard has played a vital role in local communities all over America” by providing support including peacekeeping duty, public safety, disaster relief, security services, training for law enforcement officers and more. In recent years there have been numerous changes within the units as well as within the brigade structure which have impacted their capabilities or mission at any given time. For example, on October 15th 2017 an active shooter situation developed near Point Loma State Park which led to bothunits being activated together under one command effective November 15th 2017 while also expanding their missions into air defense duties as well as homeland security tasks if needed should anything happen during Hurricane Maria preparations thus far (This is also not counting deployments for Operation Neptune Spear or other joint exercises). In 1922, the city of Seal Beach approved plans to develop the area into an amusement park. The first amusement park in Seal Beach was called "Pleasure Pier" and it opened in 1924. The park was very successful and helped make Seal Beach one of the most popular vacation destinations in California. In 1935, the city of Seal Beach decided to sell the amusement park to the Phelps Dodge Corporation. The corporation renamed it "SeaWorld". SeaWorld began operating the park as an theme-park until 1996 when it was sold to Michael Eisner's172 company Disney Parks Holdings Incorporated (DPH). DPH has since taken over management of Sea World and is currently planning to reopen it as a theme-park once again with several new attractions.
