The Seal Beach Naval Shipyard and Museum is a historic shipyard in Seal Beach, California that houses the only remaining USS Constitution class battleship. The ship was built in 1913-1914 by the Newport News Shipbuilding and Engineering Company under the direction of Captain John F. Kennedy, Jr. The Constitution was one of four U.S. ships to be commissioned into the United States Navy during President Woodrow Wilson's term as President, which marked an important change for America's naval strategy after years of reliance on Spain and Great Britain. After World War I ended with signing of Treaty Of Versailles, America began to build new warships to replace those lost in war (e.g., USS Maine). However, no navy could afford such large investments anymore so Congress passed the National Defense Act of 1920 which authorized construction of 4 new battleships: USS Oklahoma (BB-20), USS Atlanta (BB-26), USS Virginia (CVA-8) and USS West Virginia (WV-1). USS Constitution Class Battleship History: Construction started on July 24th 1913 at Newport News Shipbuilding & Engineering Company with design number "CV2". On October 1st 1914 she launched from Portsmouth Naval Shipyard with her first commissioning ceremony attended by Captains John F Kennedys Jr., George Dewey and Theodore Roosevelt who were then Admirals - now first secretaries of state! She was named after then US Vice President James K Polk while her sister ship BB 21 became the first US warship to carry this name in 1917 when she participated in World War I off Europe! Just before entering service both CV2s had been outfitted for their unique role as Flagship ships for each branch of service! The speed record for a transatlantic crossing being set soon afterwards when CV2 made it across Atlantic Ocean fastest ever covered distance = 9 days 5 hours 25 minutes!!! Unfortunately within 2 years she had to leave active duty due to engine failure but that didn't stop her from achieving countless records including longest single voyage ever made @ 26 days covering 814 NM!!! That's right folks...the old “Great White Fleet” managed TWO trips around Cape Horn!!!!! In 1922 CV3 joined forces with CSS Albemarle therefore becoming ONE big funnel shaped target/destroyer type ship....... Finally we reach our present day.....USS Constitution Class Battleship..............

She was decommissioned after World War II and is now on display at Portsmouth Naval Dockyard where she still operates today as a museum ship for tourists visiting Britain.
