Seaside was founded in 1876 by Commodore George Crocker and his partner, Capt. John Richardson. The town was named after the nearby shoreline of Pacific Beach where Crocker had first seen salt water on a voyage from New York City to China. The town's first post office opened in 1877. It closed in 1886 due to lack of customers. Seaside grew rapidly during the early years of its existence and by 1905 it boasted a population of over 1,500 people. In 1915, the city limit was extended to include the entire eastern end of San Diego Bay and Seaside became an incorporated city with a population of 6,000 people. During World War II, Seaside played an important role as one of the main supply points for the military in San Diego County. In 1943, the city government created a naval air station at Seaside which served as the homeport for Naval Air Station (NAF) Miramar until its closure in 1946. In 1969, local residents approved annexation by Imperial Beach which increased Seaside's population to over 10,000 people by 1975. By 2000, development along California State Route 95 had begun adjacent to Seaside beachforming seawalls that have preserved much of what was once seashore activity and made it difficult for visitors to enjoy most aspects of their visit without leaving their vehicles parked at anchor outside popular spots like Blue Lagoon and Wildcat Cove accessible only through boat tours or hiking trails extending out into open ocean beyond popular beaches like Doheny & Point Loma
