The Marine Corps Deployment Gift History Museum in Seaside, California houses a diverse collection of Marines' personal items from throughout their service. The museum is open to the public every day from 9am to 4pm. The Marines who served in the Vietnam War brought with them a wealth of souvenirs and equipment that they could never have imagined would one day be donated to the military museum. Many Marines were stationed in coastal towns such as Seaside during their service, and many of these civilians collected any and all pieces of Marine gear they could find. This was particularly true for those Marines who served in the Vietnam War, as private ownership of military equipment was strictly forbidden at that time. In 1969, Captain John Withers donated his captain's chair from the USS Enterprise (CVN-66) to the Marine Corps Deployment Gift History Museum. That same year, Sergeant First Class Jerry Sitton donated his rifle rangefinder from Company C 2nd Battalion 7th Regiment during Operation Cedar Falls II at Phuoc Tuy Province. In 1971, Lance Corporal Donald Forney turned over his M-16 assault rifle to Headquarters Company 1st Battalion 3rd Marines at Danang Air Base after serving as Weapons Specialist on board ship duringOperation Denial III off North Viet Nam. From 1972-1975, Master sergeant James Fenton Turnbaugh contributed an American flagpole from Camp Pendleton Harbor located just north of San Diego County which he had taken down while commanding Company A 2nd Battalion 5th Marines ashore at Qui Nhon Beach following Operation Neptune's Spear. It wasn't until 1975 that Captain Robert Gannon donated his command post stool from Camp Pendleton Harbor when he took command of 3rd Reconnaissance Squadron aboard USS Coral Sea (LPD-9) during its deployment off South Vietnam entitled "Vietnam Yearbook 1975." Throughout its history, the Marine Corps Deployment Gift History Museum has been dedicated to preserving and displaying assets and memorabilia belonging to members of the military who have deployed within our borders since World War II.
