The history of the Seaside Shooter gift shop can be traced back to 1948 when Charles K. Smith opened his first store in Seaside, California. He sold firearms and ammunition products from a small storefront on Second Street. From there, Smith grew the business into a successful chain with stores throughout California and Nevada. In 1976, Smith purchased the assets of his former competitor, J.C. Penney, and continued to grow the Seaside Shooter brand until it was acquired by Walmart in 2005. The company has since been reborn as Walmart’s exclusive retailer for firearms and Ammunition gifts. Today, Seaside Shooter is one of the most popular gift retailers in town. Seaide is a town in Marin County, California, United States. The population was 7,412 at the 2010 census. It is part of the San Francisco Bay Area. The townsite was laid out by Jedediah Smith in 1827 on land that he acquired from the Reyes family of Rancho Rinconada. The name "Seaide" comes from Spanish meaning "shoreline." In 1862, the residents of Dennisville voted to move to Seaide because of concerns about water quality near their community. In 1922, an armistice ended World War I and led to a increase in traffic along Highway 1A which paralleled the coast. This caused problems for homeowners who needed to keep their properties clear of piers and other obstacles created by road construction projects; some were forced to sell their homes or move away. There were two wars fought at or near Seaide- World War II and Vietnam- so there has never been any real need for a military installation hereabouts but it's always nice to have one eliminated just in case...or maybe they're still using it as an airfield? Who knows!
On October 29, 1849, the first post office was established on Seaside Peninsula by Captain John P. Farnam with a mail bag and letter box. The first mail was sent from San Francisco to Seaside on December 4th. The first store in Seaside opened in 1851 and was called the "Farnam's Store." In 1865, the town of Seaside became an incorporated municipality. In 1892, seaside married its sister city of Daly City and created a Municipal Borough separate from San Francisco. In 1906, the Panama-Pacific International Bridge linking California to Nevada collapsed and killed more than 50 people; Seaside became an annex of Reno County. In 1978, due to increasing development around the peninsula, the town changed its name back to Seaside Peninsula.
