Beyer named it after his mother’s birthplace—the town called Swansea in Wales—and set about developing what is now downtown Seaside into an important commercial center for goods exported from Southern California and points northward. In 1902 a fire destroyed most ofBeyer’s business but he rebuilt it within two years and renamed it Harbor City after himself and Harborspoon Brewery which he built adjacent to the harbor. By 1909 Harbor City had become one of America's leading ports with its own navy Yard that handled both merchant shipping and naval supplies arriving from Asia. In 1915 Isadora Duncan opened her first store in what is now Macy's department store on Broadway Street between First Street South and Second Street North.
