Seaide is a town in Marin County, California, located on the Golden Gate Peninsula. The population was 3,663 at the 2010 census. It is part of the San Francisco Bay Area. In 1853, George Witter donated land to build a wharf and community on it for sailors and their families who would disembark their ships at Sausalito or Tiburon to buy supplies before continuing their journey inland. He named it after his homeport of Syracuse, New York. The first post office in Seaside opened in 1870. By 1875, there were four businesses in the town: a store, two breweries (the Stinson Brewery and the California Brewing Company), and an hotel. The first school was built in 1876 by Phebe Ladd as a girls' school; it became co-educational in 1902. A small sawmill was also started in Seaside around this time. In 1886, developer Denton Stratton erected what is now known as Stratton House which still stands today within minutes of where he developed his property into what is now Seaside Heights tomorrow's Marina district overlooking Sausalito Strait offering magnificent views of the Pacific Ocean from its heavily wooded waterfront site overlooking much of downtownSausalito with easy access to all thatowntown has to offer including restaurants/bars/stores/cafés etc...Denton Stratton's development spawned many other commercial establishments over ensuing years such as The Golden Gate Hotel which opened right next door back then (& still does), The Marinas restaurant chain & Grill open up back then too just across from Stratton House - all making use of that magnificent waterfront view! Many famous people have called Seaside home including author Japhy Jones (founder & CEOCEOof Sea World amusement park) & actor Dean Martin who both lived here during their careers ; president Lyndon Johnson once visited while running for office; actress Shirley MacLaine grew up here & later moved to Northern California
