The Selma Air Force Base has been a part of the United States military since 1947. The base is located in Selma, California and is home to the 117th Airlift Wing which provides airlift services to deployed military members and their families. The wing also operates an aerial refueling service known as Joint Task Force-Southern California. The wing was established on October 1, 1947 as the Selma Flying Training Squadron (later the 117th Airlift Wing) at Selma Army Air Field. It was initially composed of two squadrons: the 113th Bombardment Squadron and the 116th Troop Carrier Squadron. In 1951, both squadrons were redesignated as wings and became operational subordinate to First Air Force headquarters stationed at Barksdale AFB, Louisiana. On September 12, 1990, First Air Force activated out of Barksdale AFB with elements from Headquarters Sixth Aircraft Command under its command after Operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm ended. On October 3rd, 1990 First Air Forces activated its first fighter squadron-the 114th Fighter Wing-at Selma Army Air Field under newly designated EighthAir Division command along with Tactical Aerospace Maintenance Plant No. 2 (TAMP2) and other associated facilities within First AF’s boundary at Patton AFB near San Antonio TX. TAMP2 served as SecondAF’s main depot for USAF aircraft spare parts until it closed in 1993 following US withdrawal from IAF due to budget cuts back then known informally as “the black budget” by many

In Selma, California—a small town located in the Central Valley of California on the border of Sacramento and Nevada—the city's history can be traced back to 1847. The area that now includes Selma was first settled by Native Americans, who called it Tso-wa-ta-nim, meaning "place where water flows." In 1848, during the Mexican–American War, General José Joaquín Cárdenas and his army occupied Selma. From then until the end of the war in 1850, Selma was under military rule. After the war ended, a group of Englishmen organized a community called Fishhook Landing. They named their settlement after an old Spanish fishing village near Monterey Bay known as Muelle de la Hacienda (Gardens of Fisheries). When American forces arrived in California in 1851 and took over power from Mexican authorities, they decided to move the headquarters of their government from Mexico City to San Francisco. The Englishmen who had founded Fishhook Landing decided to remain in California and continued to call their settlement Selma. The first post office was established at Fishhook Landing in 1853; it served as the only outpost within Californian territory until 1862 when a post office was established at Stockton. The name “Selma” first appears on county maps dated 1861 and 1870. By 1880 there were three businesses operating at Fishhook Landing: a grocery store run by Jno Wills Sr., an apothecary operated by Drs John Aiken and James Sloan II, and a sawmill run by George Stephenson III which produced lumber for local homes. As early as 1865 Captain John Fenton purchased land adjacent to what is now downtown Selma from Samuel Ralston Purvis for $3 per acre (in today's dollars it would be around $150 million). Fenton developed what is now downtownSelma into one of America's largest cotton plantations with more than 1 million acres grown between 1865 and 1890 producing opium for China while also employing some 25% of all African Americans working within Ulysses S Grant's Union Army during its ill-fated attempt to Overthrow Spanish rule in California during those years
