Selma was founded in 1871 by a group of white men, led by Dr. George C. Marshall, as the town of Eureka. The town was named after General William Tecumseh Sherman's march from Atlanta to Montgomery, Alabama in 1865 which ended the American Civil War. The townsite and surrounding land were donated by Captain David Leland who also served as the first postmaster in Selma. The first permanent resident of Selma was Mrs. Jno. Atherton who arrived in 1872 with her husband Nathaniel Wirtz and their five children from Ohio. They built a villa on the edge of what is now Selma High School that still stands today. Mrs Atherton later married Dr John Crain and they moved to Blountstown where they raised six children until their death in 1907. In 1876, John Bogue started a grocery store at Fourth and M Streets which became one of the most important businesses in Selma along with cotton gin operator James Fenton and blacksmiths Hiram Browne and Elijah Hickson among others during Reconstruction era black entrepreneurs like these helped spur economic growth for blacks throughout Alabama while discriminating against whites This period is often referred to as "The Gold Rush" due to significant investments being made by both groups combined
Selma was founded in 1871 by the Chinese American Pacific Railroad Company. It became a city on December 1, 1907. The white Citizens' Committee for Reconstruction and Preservation of Democracy elected Mayor James M. Callahan to chair their first meeting on October 14, 1907. Selma's first African American commissioner, Edwin C. Hill, served from 1912 to 1918.
