Selma, California is a town in the counties of Kern and Riverside on the Central Coast of California. The population was 23,763 at the 2010 census. Selma's history dates back to 1887 when it was founded as a small agricultural community by Anglo-Saxon immigrants. In 1924, Selma became part of the City of Los Angeles and in 1957 it became an unincorporated community within the city limits. In 1991, Selma was incorporated into the City of Compton. The name Selma is derived from Spanish word "selva" meaning woods or forested area, and "mala" meaning bad or evil. The first coffeehouses in Selma were located near Post Office Park on First Street between Washington Boulevard and Hoover Boulevard. These early cafes served primarily German customers who spoke no English well enough to order drinks inside the cafés themselves but received them translated for them by their waitstaffs who would then pick up their orders at home. Cafes such as these were not typical of gourmet coffee places which started springing up all over America during this time period beginning with Starbucks in 1974 . Gourmet Coffee began being offered more heavily through independent chains such as Baja Cafe (later known as Cupcaket) and Dinerama starting around 1978 although there are still some small strongholds of gourmet coffee businesses left throughout America today like Café Grumpy in New Haven Connecticut and Sweetwater Coffee Roasters in Austin Texas

Selma is a city located in the state of California, on the East Coast of the United States. It was named after Selma James, an African American woman who participated in the Montgomery Bus boycott in 1955. The city has been nicknamed "the black Mecca" and "the Rosa Parks of California." Selma's slogan is "Bear with me: I'll get there." The community that now makes up Selma was first settled by Native Americans in the late 18th century. A post office called Red Bluff was established in 1795, and remained operational until 1856. The area that would become Selma was first explored by Jedediah Smith and his party as they made their way westward during the Mexican–American War (1846-48). Upon arriving at what is now Selma, they found it uninhabited and decided to establish a trading post here. They named their new settlement after General Sam Houston, who had helped lead Texas against Mexico. In 1871, John Wesley Powell arrived in California from Nevada with his team of men looking for a route to the Colorado River. Heading north from San Francisco on July 7, 1871, he came across what he thought were small figures walking between hills near present-day downtown Selma. When he got closer he realized these were people - black women and children - participating in a peaceful march from Montgomery to integration services being offered at Central High School (now City College). On October 15th, 1955*, nonviolent civil rights activist Martin Luther King Jr., along with other leaders including Reverend Jerry Falwell Sr., walked into Central High School to give speeches about racial justice before classes began*; this event became known as the Montgomery Bus Boycott*. AfterKing's speech*—and subsequent protests outside local businesses throughout Alabama—he announced plans for a statewide boycott of all public transportation systems within 100 miles of Memphis unless similar measures were taken against bus drivers' discrimination against African Americans.* This led to mass civil disobedience by African American drivers throughout Alabama throughout November and December 1955†; this sparked national protests which ultimately ended when Attorney General Julius Erving announced Operation Neptune's Spear®, which targeted only Southern white mobs*. On January 6th 1956*, Governor Edmund Muskie signed into law SB 1070*, which declared that all blacks must be registered with law enforcement authorities within 10 days or face criminal penalties‡; this measure led to increased violence against innocent demonstrators and quickly became known as “Selma’s Bloody Friday”†.* In response to rioting dubbed “Black Monday”† on February 5th 1956† following passage of AB 368*, Mayor Eugene Robinson ordered National Guard troops onto University Avenue*; this action precipitated another round of peaceful protests calling for an end to segregation *Note: There have been multiple attempts over time at understanding how exactly events unfolded leading up to SNCC's decision not participate in #Selmasupremeparade – please read my paper on that subject below*) . This continued unrest culminated into March 5th 1957 when Federal Judge Isadore Stern issued his decision ordering desegregation of buses within five days or face legal consequences‡.; again protesters tooktothe streets en masse(*Note: See also my paper on SNCC's role in #Selmasupremeparade*) . On April 4teenth 1957+, GovanTed Brown signalled official endof segregated bus servicewithinAlabamaby announcingthatall transfers wouldbemade through centralTransfer stationinMontgomery ratherthan through individual counties (* Note: This move effectively ends Greyhound bus service withinAlabama) *. This markeda turning point for many people associatedwith SNCC as it signaled an end nailinthe coffinofsegregationwithinAlabama *. At least one person died as a result of this turmoil*!

The English started cultivating coffee in Jamaica in 1565 and began exporting it to Europe around 1640. In 1847, Swiss chemist Julius Jacob von Baer developed a process for extracting caffeine from beans that became known as wet roasting.
Selma, California is a city in the U.S. state of California and the seat of Sonoma County. The population was 53,775 at the 2010 census, making Selma one of the most populous cities in California. It is also the largest city in Northern California by area. The town of Selma was founded on May 12, 1859 by four brothers who came from central Europe to North America as part of theoverland gold rush. They named their new settlement after Almira (Almira), a town they had seen while exploring San Francisco Bay. The first post office opened in Selma on July 1, 1860. In 1863, Selma became an incorporated village when it joined Unincorporated Santa Clara County. The name change came about because early residents preferred "selva" – meaning woodland or forest – to "town". In 1868, voters passed a resolution proclaiming that "the place where I now stand shall be known as Selma; and nothing which may hereafter happen will change my mind." The City Council then changed its name to honor fallen Civil War General Nathan Bedford Forrest with a resolution asking for his remains to be moved from Georgia to Selma so that he could be buried near Union soldiers killed during the battle at Mission Dolores on October 7, 1868. The General's body was brought back north and interred at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Los Angeles after being exhumed from his original resting place near Mission Dolores by order of President Franklin D Roosevelt on April 5, 1948.Morgenstern Park: A History of Selmas Neighborhoods A local restaurant called Forrest's Grill served food until 1984 when it closed due to health concerns related to lead service levels inside the restaurant according to news reports at the time.Restaurant closure prompts outcry among locals Selma also saw some heavy use during World War II as military facilities were built there including Fort Bragg and Camp Pendleton. After World War II ended andSelma's economy began declining due largely to suburbanization within its boundaries various efforts were made over several decades culminating with Measure R-5 which would annex eastern Sonoma County intoSonoma County in 1963 creating what is nowSanta Rosa County. 10 years later San Francisco annexed much of what remained of eastern Sonoma County too leaving only small portions still belonging to Selma. In 2000 Measure R-1 was passed through county government resulting in annexation of unincorporated areas around Santa Rosa (
