Selma was founded in 1871 by George Hearst and his wife, Elizabeth Woolridge Grant. The town was named for the black woman who had supported him during the California Gold Rush. Selma's first store, a one-room building, sold groceries and cigarettes. The town grew rapidly, and by 1870 it had a school and two churches. In 1875, Selma became the county seat of San Luis Obispo County. In that year, tensions between white settlers and Black Americans boiled over into violence. White mobs descended on Selma, looted stores and homes, burned down buildings, and killed three people. One hundred thousand African Americans were living in California at this time; many of them were fleeing violence or poverty in their home states. Despite the safety concerns of the community's nascent citizens, George Hearst decided to move his family to Selma in order to build an empire within the new country he had discovered—a land where color wasn't a determining factor for success or social mobility. By 1880, Hearst controlled more than 20 percent of all U.S.-based oil reserves. He also invested heavily in real estate development throughout Southern California; by 1886 he had built more than fifty thousand square miles (100 kilometers) of citrus groves across seven counties in what is now Orange County—the largest citrus crop on earth. The townsfolk of Selma quickly came to appreciate their new leader's largesse: He provided food for his own personal household as well as subsidized education for local children; he donated land to charitable organizations; and he spent lavishly on cultural programs such as art exhibitions and music festivals nationwide (Hearst "owned" dozens of newspapers). Although some residents disapproved of Hearst's ownership approach or felt that he was taking advantage of Black Americans without their consent or support (he famously used race as a tool against rival businessmen), most inhabitants5 saw him as an important leader with whom they could identify and look up to.—[1]
