The Selma Coffee Company was founded by Colonel William H. Townsend in 1868. The Selma Coffee Company was among the first American companies to export coffee to Europe and the Far East. In 1902, the company became a member of the International Coffee Society and exported its beans all over the world. The Selma Coffee Company ceased operations in 1962, but its legacy lives on through its coffee beans, which are now sold throughout North America and Europe.

Fremont, who fought against Mexico during the Mexican–American War (1846-48). The name "Fremont" has been used by both American and British settlers in central California for over 200 years because it is one of five original Towns Assigned to Fremont Township on January 1st 1795 under direction of Governor Manuel Nieto de la Rúa y Castilla y Chapultepec – although these early settlers were not related to General John C. Fremont or his erstwhile wife Lucy Stone Fremont (née Richarder). The City seal contains two sampans with Spanish writing at either end: "El Carmen" and "Granada". These vessels were berthed at what is now called Eastern Market Place during gold Rush days when goods from El Valle were transported downriver to San Francisco via riverboats carrying miners and their families; later they served as warehouses for local merchants until their removal from downtown Selma during World War II to make way for new military barracks which still stand today near Enterprise Park Drive/Eastern Market Place; finally they served as Damen's store front until moved inland into their present location near Railroad Avenue when that store closed its doors in 1958 (see below). The current Seal was designed by artist Don Freeman and adopted on November 3rd 1956 while City Manager Waddell Goodyear supervised ceremonies following Mayor Eugene Sisco's presentation to the Board of Supervisors concerning plans for incorporation into Sonoma County pursuant to Proposition 209 (the racially discriminatory anti-discrimination measure repealed by Measure AA in 1978). A plaque located onstage read: Eleanor Roosevelt Homestead Foreclosure Sale Site marker In March 1951 President Harry Truman signed Executive Order 9982 creating Special Service Units known as Task Force 63 which responded rapidly to disturbances erupting throughout Latin America—the largest peacetime American peacetime operation since World War II! Task Force 63 included African Americans such as James Baldwin who became nationally famous through his reporting for Newsweek magazine about life inside Guatemala’s Pinochet dictatorship

Rioting and violence followed as protesters took to the streets against police brutality and economic inequity. In 1969, after Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s assassination, protests morphed into an anti-war movement called "Black Panthers." After several years of civil unrest, Selma residents voted to secede from California in 1972 amid heated debate over race and education priorities. In recent years, Selma has seen resurgent interest in its history as a hub for black culture and democracy promotion. Local organizations such as theSelma Heritage Museum have worked to preserve local artifacts while hosting summer cultural festivals throughout the year.
