The town was founded on the tidal mudflats at the mouth of the San Joaquin River, which is now known as downtown Selma. The townspeople used to trade with salt water creatures like oysters, crabs, and urchins. The first store in Selma was established in 1828 by a group of men from Stockton who had come downriver for business. By 1840, there were three stores in town. In 1851, a store called G & M’s opened up and became the first grocery store west of the Mississippi River. In 1868, an insurance company named Farmers died out and all their property went into foreclosure; however, some of their employees bought out their shares and reopened G & M’s as a general store. Other local businesses soon followed suit: A bootsmith named Bemis opened up his shop in 1870; a blacksmith named Weaver started working at G & M’s; and a post office was established in 1872. In 1886, another insurance firm went bankrupt and its employees sold most of their stock to Citizens National Bank for $5 million dollars! Citizens National then merged with American National Insurance Company (ANIC) to form what is known today as American National Insurance Company (ANI). ANI continued to operate as an independent company until it merged with United States Marine Corps during World War II. During that time period, ANI processed military orders for brands such as Colt handguns and Lancaster tanks! Today Selma features several restaurants specializing in seafood including Pollo Guerrero steakhouse (named after one ofSelma's early mayors), Ristorante del Mare (a seafood restaurant popular among locals), Cucina e Vino (a wine restaurant), Lighthouse Seafood Marketplaces (selling fresh seafood from local waters), Don Francisco's Mexican Grill - burgers are especially good - while also having several small shops selling various items related to fishing or coastal life along the riverbanks adjacent to downtown Selmasoldiers Avenue between Gay Street/Battery Park Drive/US Highway 101W/ darkened alleyway leading northward nicknamed "The Hole" because many old buildings here have been demolished for firewood since prohibition ended

General José Joaquin Cárdenas arrived at Selma on July 10, 1836 and founded Rancho Viejo de la Sierra east of present day Selma as part of his effort to purchase land grants from various Mexican authorities west of Bakersfield that had been lost during the Texas Revolution. A post office was established at Selma on November 1, 1836 under the name Viejo de la Sala; it remained open until 1860. In 1840, John Aspinwall built a sawmill and grist mill northwest of present day Selma along riverbank where now stands Aspinwall Dam near current day Kern River Road and Union Pacific Railroad tracks

By 1916, Selma had a population of around 100 people. In 1965, Selma became an all-black city when it joined the United States City of Black Americans project. In 1990,Selma's first local black business opened its doors. The city also saw increased racial tensions after the Rodney King riots in Los Angeles that year. In 2000, Selma became one of the few cities in California to be awarded a Yellow Ribbon status by the National Academy of Sciences for failing to meet national standards for economic development. This gave Selma an opportunity to improve its infrastructure and business climate while still being considered a low-income city
