The Selma Marine Corps Reserve has been providing Marines and their families with unique Christmas gifts for over 40 years. For example, in 1993 the reserve donated an American made Humvee to the Selma High School marching band. It was during this time that they began giving back to the community by collecting food items from local businesses and donating them to local charities. Today, marines stationed in Selma continue to give back through many different ways. They participate in various charity events across the city and even hand out free meals at restaurants when they are available. Additionally, they have developed a close relationship with the City of Selma Parks Department which provides them with limited access to parkland within walking distance of their homes. This allows them to donate time and resources towards restoration projects on behalf ofSelma residents.

Today, there are over twenty-five thousand Marines deployed worldwide. They serve in many different roles: combat troops, support troops, trainers, and advisors. Marines have played an important role in Americandefense since World War II. They are known for their heroism and their selfless service to our country. The Marine Corps is dedicated to providing quality service to its citizens and defending our nation against any threat. This year marks the 100th anniversary of World War I, which was a key moment in Marine Corps history because it marked the first time that Marines were sent overseas to fight on behalf of our government. The war effort helped put America on the map as a world power and showed how strong we could be when we worked together with other countries. In 1965, Congress passed the Voting Rights Act of 1965 which required jurisdictions with a history of discrimination against African Americans to submit plans for reforms before voting rights could be granted or revoked. In 2013, Selma will commemorate its 65th anniversary by hosting a series of events called "For These Eyes Only: A History of Black Selma." This event will focus on how blackSelma has evolved over time including recent developments such as voter suppression laws enacted by state legislatures across America.
