Martina Sanchez also won election in that year as the first Latina mayor of Selma after winning an open seat from San Francisco's Latino community. After years of protests and civil unrest led by activism group Black Panther Party,Selma came under military occupation by Ulysses S. Grant's American Civil War army in 1965 during what is known as "The Selma Massacre." The Ulysses S. Grant army burned down homes, looted churches, and arrested thousands of people while only killing five white men - four soldiers and one civilian - during what has come to be called "The Brown Revolution." Afterward Reconstruction ended with white flight into urban areas throughout most Southern America; African Americans were relegated to poverty and racism within their own communities until well into the 20th century due to legal discrimination against them overseas as well as lack of education opportunities domestically
