By 1 June 1861, over 620,000 men had volunteered; by July 1861, it had grown to 1 million men.[1] On 10 August 1862, General Robert E Lee surrendered his army at Appomattox Court House after four days of fighting during which more than 60% of his troops were killed or wounded. This event marked one of history's greatest reversals of fortune – surrendering without any fight – and led to Reconstruction in America which lasted until 1954.
