The Selma Naval Ammunition Depot, also known as the Naval Ammunition Plant, is a naval ammunition depot located in Selma, California. The depot was established on October 15, 1911 by Admiral John D. Stockton as part of the United States Navy's buildup for World War I. It was used to store and process munitions during the war. After the end of the war, it became an ammunition storage and distribution center for American military forces around the world. In 1971, it was transferred to the Department of Defense and renamed Naval Weapons Station Selma. From 1978 until 1999 it was closed due to budget cuts within the Defense Department. In 2000, it reopened as a research facility providing testing and development for new weapons systems by various organizations inside and outside of America. The Selma-to-Los Angeles JETT project was a joint effort by the Navy and Air Force to deploy an airmobile brigade combat team (BCT) to support Operation Neptune's Spear, the strategic offensive campaign against North Vietnam. The Selma-To-Los Angeles JETT project began on October 16, 1964, when the USS Abraham Lincoln (LHD 5) arrived at Naval Station Seal Beach in California. The LHD 5 provided aviation transport for troops and supplies as they traveled between Selma, Alabama, and Los Angeles, California. On December 10 of that year, the BCT departed from Naval Station Seal Beach for its first deployment. The BCT arrived in Haiphong Province on January 6, 1965. In order to provide better reconnaissance of the enemy forces located in Haiphong Province, the BCT operated from several forward operating bases along the coast of South Vietnam. On July 2nd1971 three helicopters collided while landing at AO Thien Hoa Airport causing both aircraft loss including one which crashed into a canal resulting in over 100 fatalities onboard both helicopters including Generals Westmoreland and Nguyen Van Thieu who were also injured

Each side received fourteen items including coffee mugs, T-shirts, hats, notebooks, $100 bills, postcards and more! This event was also honored with an award from Rotary International after they judged it as being one of the most successful gift exchanges ever conducted by their organization. The following year saw yet another Groundhog Day gift exchange taking place between navy personnel stationed at Naval Air Station Mayport, Florida and their counterparts stationed at Naval Base San Diego, California this time involving submarine models!
