The Selma Naval Air Station has been a naval air station in the City of Selma since 1941. It is now part of the U.S. Navy's Southern California Air Defense Sector and is home to the Sealift Command, which supports maritime operations throughout the Western Pacific Area. The importance of naval air stations in coastal communities such as Selma cannot be overestimated and their history dates back to World War II when they were used as submarine patrol points, providing cover for carrier task forces operating in the Pacific Ocean. Selma Naval Air Station was first established on October 1st, 1941 at a site near what is now known as Moorpark Boulevard and Santa Monica Boulevard within downtown Selma. The squadron at that time consisted of two P-40 Warhawks from VMF-1 "The Fighting Furies" Squadron 15th Fighter Group (15FG), which had originated from NAS Jacksonville, Florida duringWorld War I. In 1942, the squadron was redesignated VF-3 "The Eagles". On December 10th 1942 after Japan bombed Pearl Harbor USS Enterprise (CVN 64) port side with resulting damage that limited her availability for combat dutyant aviation until April 1943 she became available again for VF-3 flying patrols off Leyte Gulf Philippines area until May 1945 when she returned to San Francisco Bay area.. The squadron continued flying antisubmarine patrols until September 1946 while being allocated to Commander Aircraft Training Unit 3rd Fleet - Far East Detachment American Forces China Service detachment - at anchor in Shanghai Jiangsu province.. On October 8th 1946 following reestablishment of VSAAF at Yokosuka Naval Base Japan new unit designated VMF(A)-5 "The Tigers" Squadron with 4 Grumman Wildcats initially assigned but these planes were soon replaced by Lockheed P-38 Lightning fighters On November 16th 1946 VF(A)-5 moved from Yokosuka Naval Base Japan to Suva Atoll Fiji where it operated under Marine Corps command before being transferred back to United States Navy on January 2nd 1947 becoming USS Tarpon (LPH 56). From Tarpon patrolled gateway waters between Hawaiian Islands Territory Republic Of Hawaii And American Samoa For More than Two Years performing intelligence gathering activities Alongwith conducts anti enemy air patrols over Friendly Islands areas . USS Tarpon also transported supplies To Truk Atoll during Operation Coral Sea just prior To Japanese Attack On 24 July 1944 however all objectives failed including loss of life onboard ship .. Selma was a small town in the Mojave Desert of California during the late 1800s. The name Selma comes from "Saleh," which means "to cross" or "to go over." The first post office in Selma was established on December 12, 1892. It was named for General John A. Garver, who served as Commandant of West Point at that time. The town experienced some growth in the early 1900s as people came to work in nearby Los Angeles and Reno. However, by World War II, Selma had become a sleepy community with few businesses and no residents. However, after the war ended, Selma began to experience another period of growth as people returned to the town and started new businesses. In 1951, the United States Route 95 (US 95) was built through Selma and it quickly became an important artery linking East L.A., Reno NV and Tucson AZ
