Selma was a small town in the Central Valley of California, located about 50 miles east of Sacramento. It was founded by J.D. Payne in 1867 and became an important cotton center during the late 19th century. Selma's population peaked at around 10,000 in the 1920s but fell rapidly after World War II due to agricultural decline and other factors. The town's only commercial structure was a post office that closed in 1967. Selma is now a ghost town, although some residents continue to live thereabouts. Although Selma has no living history remaining today, it has been preserved through two efforts: 1) as a Historic District on City of Selma land which encompasses portions of the downtown area; and 2) as part of the larger city-county planning process for central California known as "The Heritage Area". The district is significant because it contains many examples of early 20th century American architecture, including examples from Payne and his wife's family (the Peebles). Additionally, most of downtown is also covered by a sculpture garden dedicated to local farmers who grew crops along with people in nearby rural towns during this time period. Selma's first settler was J.D. Payne, who arrived there in 1867 on horseback from Missouri.. In 1868 he married Anna Maria Sanchez and they started their own farmstead near present-day Yelverton Avenue and Main Street (now within modern day Fresno).
