Selma, California is a city in Alameda County, California, United States. The population was 54,651 at the 2010 census. It is the second most populous city in Alameda County after Oakland and the most populous city east of the Golden Gate Bridge. Selma's history spans more than three hundred years and includes struggles for civil rights, including one of the largest protests in U.S. history—the "Selma to Montgomery Bus Boycott"—and an important battle against racism that led to passage of Proposition 13 in 1978. Today Selma is known for its role as a cultural center and major manufacturing center for automotive parts and tires. The area now called Selma was first settled by Native Americans about 12000 years ago according to archeological evidence from nearby Mount Diablo National Recreation Area. The first Europeans to arrive were Spanish traders who landed on what is now downtown Selma on October 26, 1777 during Mission San Francisco de Asis's final journey from Monterey Bay to Stockton with supplies for Manila Bay Colony ( Manila Bay was then part of Spain). After Mexican independence in 1821, land grants were made available through independent Mexican colonies throughout Alameda County as part of Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo which ended the American War for Independence and ceded Mexico City extensive territory north of Sonoma River including present-day Selma Valley including all or portions of: Fremont, Newark (now Orinda), Union City (now Hayward), Walnut Creek (now Livermore), Antioch(now Oakland), Danville(now Dixon), Dublin(later Pleasanton) and Escondido(later Irvine). On November 3rd 1847 Willard Richards organized a group under the banner “American Association” to promote agricultural development within what would become Alameda County; he traveled throughout California preaching till his death on January 10th 1850 due to overwork at home while his wife nursed their young son John into manhood. Richards' goal was "…to secure possession by purchase or purchase alone either side Pacific Coast" - so that white citizens could settle without fear Indian raids or forced labor shortages caused by large numbers arriving following America's Civil War victory over Mexico who had lost much land along the borderlands between Californias Nevada territories Las Vegas Valley – Mono Lake – El Centro Hills – Nye Valley etc... influential men such as James Fenton became involved with this effort and formed what we know today as Friends Meetinghouse #5 located on Chestnut Street near Center Avenue where Meetings took place every weeknight until May 1870 when Friend #24 moved across Center avenue into buildings facing Park Row after meeting daily at Hancock Building since February 4th 1851...In 1865 when Salt Lake Railroad arrived thru Napa & Yuba Counties they reached very near Suisun Butte but left because there was no water power available nor did they want 500 people living next door & competing with them
