The first Selma Coffee shop was opened in 1916 by Fenton and Sons. In 1922, Johnnie's Coffee Shop was opened in Selma by Harry and Belle Moore. In the early 1960s Bob Hope visited Selma for a movie shoot and purchased some coffee from local business owners on Market Street. This made Selma one of the most popular tourist destinations for coffee lovers throughout Southern California. In 1966 The Village Coffee House began serving fresh roasted coffee from local growers directly to customers at no cost. Cafe Donut also became a regular stop for locals looking for delicious coffee with good value. Selma reached its peak during the 1970s when it became known as "the birthplace of Java Jolt." Numerous popular authors and performers visited Selma during this time including William Saroyan, Zora Neale Hurston, Rita Hayworth, Lyndon Johnson and Stan Lee. The popularity of Java Jolt led to increased tourism and businesses inSelma started proliferating which helped support more than 20 cultural organizations that operate out of the small town During this time Starbucks entered into Seloma with plans to open up a full-service store within 5 years However due to high competition they only managed to open up a small convenience store inside their new location adjacent to City Hall before closing it down within 6 months due to lack of success
