Airforce gift history in Shafter, California began with the founding of the Air Force Base in 1941. The base was used as a training ground for fighter pilots. In 1949, Air Force General Curtis LeMay moved the Wing headquarters to Shafter and established the 1st Tactical Fighter Wing. The wing operated F-86F Sabre jets from 1945 until 1951. In 1957, Major General Hugh Loyalson divided the 1st Tactical Fighter Wing into two wings: the 9th Tactical Fighter Wing and 10th Tactical Fighter Wing. These wings were responsible for providing air defense for Los Angeles County and other parts of Southern California. In 1966, Major General William Halsey activated the 10th Tactical Fighter Wing as a flying training unit at nearby Edwards Air Force Base in order to provide aerial refueling services for United StatesAAF fighters operating in Southeast Asia. In 1973, Colonel Frank Knox activated an air cargo squadron at Shafter in order to provide transportation for AF aircraft stationed at Davis-Monthan AFB outside Tucson AZ during Operation Desert Storm. This was one of only a handful of USAF active units assigned directly to combat operations during that conflict. In 1994, Colonel David Aoun activated Headquarters USAF Reserve Command’s 143d Airlift Squadron (Airmen) at Shafter just in time for deployment to Haiti due to concerns over potential instability there following an earthquake that killed more than 200,000 people and injured many more. On July 25th 2002, Headquarters USAF Reserve Command’s 815th Airlift Squadron (Airmen) arrived at Shafter after being mobilized by then Chancellor George W Bush on September 11th 2001 as part of Operation Enduring Freedom which was designed to support coalition forces fighting against Taliban insurgents throughout Afghanistan. Shafter AFB has been home to several different types of military organizations over its history: The United States Army's 441st Infantry Regiment served from 1942 until 1945; The Marine Corps' 3rd Battalion served from 1942 until 1946; The Navy's 1211 Naval Aviation Group served from 1944 until 1954;The United States Air Force's 1st Tactical Fighter Wing operated from 1945 until 1951; Headquarters USAF Reserve Command’s 143d Airlift Squadron (Airmen) arrived on July 25th 2002 while deployed to Haiti just days before Hurricane Katrina struck New Orleans; and Headquarters USAF Reserve Command’s 815th Airlift Squadron (Airmen) arrived on September 11th 2001 as part of Operation Enduring Freedom supporting coalition forces fighting against Taliban insurgents throughout Afghanistan

The California Air National Guard's A-10 Warthog aerial warfare aircraft are gifts from the United States Air Force. The gift history for the A-10 Warthog began in 1941 when the U.S. Army sent a shipment of 12 A-10s to the California Air National Guard as part of its military assistance program to allies during World War II. The first combat missions using these planes were flown in February 1945, during the Battle of Okinawa. In 1951, an order was placed for an additional 100 A-10s and each unit received two more engines and new airframes between 1951 and 1957. These planes saw combat service in Vietnam and also served in Operation Desert Storm in 1991 against Iraq. In 1992, the aircraft were retired from service with the California ANG and they now reside at Edwards AFB near Los Angeles, CA where they can be used for training or exhibition purposes only.
Shafter, California is a small town in the San Joaquin Valley of California. It is located in Kern County and has a population of about 10,000 people. The town was founded in 1905 by businessmen in the lumber business. In 1916 Shafter became an unincorporated community and was annexed by neighboring Ceres. The economy of Shafter revolves around agriculture, with hay production accounting for most of the activity. The town also has a few businesses that focus on services such as roofing and plumbing. A large shopping center called "The Commons" is located near the central square where citizen-led committees sell local goods from the produce section to the general store shelves. Shafter's history can be traced back to when it was part of the Rancho Los Nietos Mexican land grant given to José María Hidalgo by Governor George Armstrong Custer on May 24, 1878. When Californians acquired title to these lands during their statehood movement, they chose not to retain Mexican ownership but instead appointed white men as managers as part of what became known as putative annexation proceedings. This process began on July 14, 1879 with Hidalgo writing to then-Governor David Bancroft: In 1916 Shafter became an unincorporated community and was annexed by neighboring Ceres after its residents successfully lobbied for this change at a meeting attended by representatives from both townships. Ceres had lost much of its agricultural production following World War I while Shafter continued to grow largely due to its location within easy access for lumber traffic coming down the San Joaquin River valley from Northern California. Today, many shopkeepers operate out of "The Commons," which features several anchor stores along one side and several smaller businesses spread throughout two levels including a movie theater and multiplex theater complex adjacent off Interstate 5 across from State Route 395; convenience stores (Griswold Bakery & Cafe; Golden Corral), RV dealerships (Alpine Motors), post office (First United Methodist Church) - all operated under one common roof since opening in 1999; gas stations featuring Chevron gasoline and spotty fast food restaurants (McDonalds).

Shafter is a small town in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 1,479 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Los Angeles metropolitan area and sits on the San Gabriel River just east of downtown Los Angeles. The community developed around a post office that was established in 1887. The name "Shafter" comes from Spanish "hacienda" meaning rancho and "paradise" meaning paradise. The Shafter post office served the community until 1915 when it closed because of low mail volume. In 1919, work began on creating a water pipeline through Shafter with results being announced in 1923 when it became possible to drink water from the river without going out into the desert first. In 1932, Shafter had its own school system which still operates today as Chico Unified School District No. 8 (CUSD #8). One of the first things that Ronald Reagan did as president was sign an executive order ordering consolidation of all but two districts within CUSD #8 to make space for new schools in neighboring communities such as Lancaster and Glendale which would result in more jobs for local people including many who had worked at Shaffer's grocery store since it opened there in 1912
