Shafter, California is a small town in the Inland Empire region of Southern California. The population was 8,571 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Greater Los Angeles area. The name Shafter comes from a mission built there in 1852 by Mexican missionaries Joaquin Moraga and José Murillo. Shafter has had its share of pioneers and ranchers over the years, including Edward Stonestreet Sr., who founded what is now Stonestreet County in 1865 on land he acquired from Mexico after driving out an Pueblo Indian community that had encroached on his Rancho San Diego de la Palma cattle ranch. In 1892, when it became one of 21 townships within Los Angeles County, Shafter voted to become an incorporated city under the name La Habra Heights. In 1924 it changed its name to what it still uses today: Shafter City Limits. The first mayor was Wm. Crainbach; First Vice Mayor was Hiram Glickman; Second Vice Mayor was Hilda Ahern-Diaz; and City Council member George Sells served as mayor for 44 years (1924-1994).

The United States Coast Guard was founded on 29 July 1790 as the United States Marine Corps. In 1917, during World War I, the Coast Guard became a part of the newly formed National Defense Service. On 15 February 1942, during World War II, the Coast Guard became a part of the United States Army and remained that way until 3 May 1944 when it was transferred back to the Department of Commerce and Labor as a part of Executive Order 9798. The Coast Guard reported to USDOI on 1 October 1947. In 1951, the Coast Guard adopted its present name - The United States Coast Guardsman - effective 1 November 1951.
